We are expecting a baby boy next month. DP is very keen to call him Ares (should add, DP is Greek, pronouncing it over in Greece wouldn't be a problem at all).

My only concern is that we live in England, and I have a feeling he'll spend the rest if his life correcting people. Would anyone mind telling me if they read Ares, how they would pronounce it?

We do have a couple of very pronoucable back ups if required 😁

A-red? Aires? Bout sure really TBH!

ANoTail · 13/09/2020 16:31

Air- ees

ToadCandle · 13/09/2020 16:31

Aires?

LadyCatStark · 13/09/2020 16:31

A-Res you wouldn’t believe how many time’s my phone insisted on autocorrecting 🙈

WorraLiberty · 13/09/2020 16:32

I'd pronounce it Ar-ez

But if I read it quickly, I see 'Arse' so I'd be a bit concerned about teasing.

CodenameVillanelle · 13/09/2020 16:32

This is not going to work in the UK. I'd pronounce it Ah-ress but it could easily be airs or airies or arris.

LadyCatStark · 13/09/2020 16:32

Oh god and now it’s put in an apostrophe 🙈

PrimeraVez · 13/09/2020 16:33

A-res

I think it’s a great name (or at least it is the way I’m saying it in my head!)

dementedpixie · 13/09/2020 16:33

I fear that people would mix the letters to get Arse.

Minnie747 · 13/09/2020 16:33

Ah-res

Soubriquet · 13/09/2020 16:33

Air-ris

TitianaTitsling · 13/09/2020 16:34

Ah-rez

doadeer · 13/09/2020 16:34

Same way you say the God. Air-reez. Though some people say it more air-es

TeddyBeans · 13/09/2020 16:34

Like Aries initially but I'd probably (and probably incorrectly) correct myself to Ah-rez

alfreds · 13/09/2020 16:35

Air ez. I wouldn't be confident that I was pronouncing it correctly though.

TheRosariojewels · 13/09/2020 16:37

I would pronounce it like Aries the star sign.

eddiemairswife · 13/09/2020 16:38

Greek God of War, according to Wikipedia, 'The personification of sheer brutality'.

sakura06 · 13/09/2020 16:41

Also like Aries the star sign.

dicksplash · 13/09/2020 16:43

I would say Air-rees - how does your DH pronounce it?

Falcone · 13/09/2020 16:43

Aries

BernardsarenotalwaysSaints · 13/09/2020 16:43

Yes, the same as the star sign here too but not a clue if that's right.

Nonamesavail · 13/09/2020 16:44

Arhh rez

SnugglySnerd · 13/09/2020 16:46

Like Aries the star sign. I have to say though, I am a teacher. I always ask the students to correct me in our first lesson together if I say their name wrong during the register and I write it out phonetically on my seating plan. When I have forgotten and pronounced it wrong later in the term it is almost always the rest of the class that corrects me so I shouldn't worry too much, their friends and teachers will all learn to say it correctly. It is a lovely name.

SE13Mummy · 13/09/2020 16:46

A-rez

Ninkanink · 13/09/2020 16:47

I wouldn’t worry about how people will pronounce it...it’s a straight up no from me because you just know the poor boy will be called ‘arse’.

The name itself is great, but you just can’t do that to the child.
