Which spelling?

Alayah or Alaia?

Pronounced Ah-lay-uh.
Love the spelling of Alaia but don’t want people to call her A-liar or Ar-lia.

I think Alayah looks how it’s spelt but is it too close to Aaliyah?

Alayah

AmIReallyThough · 13/09/2020 10:11

I know an Aleya with this pronunciation too.

Tiltheend · 13/09/2020 10:15

Alayah

To be honest, I don't think the spelling matters -- I teach at a university and have had quite a few students with variations on this name down the years, and no one spelling corresponded with any specific pronunciation or stress (which is why I remember it, because remembering took effort.) Last year I had an Aaliyah who pronounced it the way you want yours to be pronounced, for instance, but also an Aalia who pronounced it A-LYE-a. And a couple of years back an Aalia who pronounced it AH-lee-a.

So, if you're someone who is going to be bothered by people not using your preferred pronunciation, I'd honestly choose another name, because I think this one is particularly liable to being given lots of different pronunciations.

ILoveStickers · 13/09/2020 10:30

Aleya is a good idea.

Between your two - I think people will get it wrong either way. I think Alaia looks nicer written down.

Alaia

Lavenderblues · 14/09/2020 10:34

Alaya Ah lay ah.

Alaia would be Al eye ah.

ZoyaTheDestroyer · 14/09/2020 15:43

Alaïa

user1493494961 · 14/09/2020 21:14

Lots of similar types of names around, I would choose something else.

diddlediddle · 14/09/2020 23:31

I agree there are a million similar names around so it will get lost and not seem maybe as pretty and interesting as you think.

If you're dead set on it then do your daughter a favour and pick a version that has an easy pronunciation for what you want. Alayah is the better of your two since the other option would naturally be pronounced A Lie Ya .

Agree with PP that Aleya is a much much nicer spelling that would get the pronunciation you like.

Ellmau · 14/09/2020 23:43

Alaia.

EriAndo · 15/09/2020 00:16

Alaia- although the name sounds like ‘a layer’ which is a bit meh IMHO

ZoyaTheDestroyer · 15/09/2020 10:23

Oh hang on, sorry. I misread. Alaïa and Alaia will get you a-lie-a. Don’t use this spelling if you want a-lay-ah.

emilybrontescorsett · 15/09/2020 22:32

I agree with other posters. It will get his pronounced as it can be pronounced in different ways with the stress on different sounds.

emilybrontescorsett · 15/09/2020 22:32

Mis pronounced.

Bouncingbelle · 15/09/2020 23:47

Aleya

DoTheMaccaroni · 16/09/2020 16:14

‘ai’ should make an eye sound rather than an ay sound but people here seem to insist it’s an ay sound 🙄 mainly when it comes to the name ‘Mai/May’ but then Kai gets pronounced properly 🤷🏼‍♀️

GreenJellyBean · 16/09/2020 16:19

Looking at the first way you have written I would automatically think Ah-lay-ah. The second way I’d probably naturally say al-eye-a until someone corrected me Smile

Mochachoco · 16/09/2020 16:20

Aleya

len1234 · 18/09/2020 12:44

Alaia, because as you said, Alayah looks like Aaliyah. Either way it's a beautiful name. 😊
