Awful or not? If you think it’s awful do you have any ideas for something else that could give a Ginny nickname?

Love it! Love Ginny too

DramaAlpaca · 12/09/2020 23:57

I don't like Virginia at all, sorry.

Other names you could abbreviate to Ginny are Ginevra and Genevieve.

Or at a rather long stretch, Jennifer or Guinevere might work as well.

Thisismytimetoshine · 12/09/2020 23:58

I like it.

1940s · 13/09/2020 00:00

I like it.... but I like it as a mid 30s woman. Truly the thought of going through school with the name Virginia would terrify me.

IslandLulu · 13/09/2020 00:06

Beautiful name

SophieGiroux · 13/09/2020 00:30

Agree with @1940s, she would be destined to be called Virgin throughout her school years

Cherrypicker85 · 13/09/2020 00:39

I love it :)

sorryforswearing · 13/09/2020 01:15

Georgina (Ginny)
Georgia?

AuntyPasta · 13/09/2020 01:26

Virgin. Nope.

Nikori · 13/09/2020 01:31

I went to primary school with a Virginia. Yeah, the boys used to tease her and call her Vagina. It's a pretty name, but I don't think I'd use it.

Torvean32 · 13/09/2020 01:41

I knew a Virginia she was teased the whole way through secondary school. I'd avoid it.

whatausername · 13/09/2020 01:42

I would not saddle your daughter with years and years of (light-hearted or not) teasing merely so you can contrive some nickname. Call her Ginny and be done.

Virginia a lovely name...for characters. Not for real people any more.

Also, I really don't see how Ginny can be got from Genevieve unless the pronunciation is butchered.

ClinkyMonkey · 13/09/2020 01:44

Lovely name. I think of Virginia Woolf or Virginia Madsen. Ginny is a great nickname.

PeaceAndHarmoneeee · 13/09/2020 01:53

I think it's a nice name for an adult but too much teasing potential as a kid

There was a Virginia in my year at high school, she was teased about her name, people called her Virgin.

I like Ginevra and Genevieve.

1940s · 13/09/2020 09:20

If you really love Ginny could you use it as stand alone? Or put Virginia on the birth certificate and intro from day one inc school registers as Ginny? She really will have a tough time at school with Virginia as her name. It's a shame as it's a lovely name

IslandLulu · 13/09/2020 09:56

Re-thinking my answer... I still think Virginia is a lovely name. But I guess it is underused for a reason. I can see how it might lead to unwanted teasing in school.

Maybe have it for a middle name?

Or go for Jennifer, Jane, Georgina, Georgianna, Gianna, Gillian, Genevieve, with nn Ginny.

Ellmau · 13/09/2020 09:59

Ginevra

ginghamtablecloths · 13/09/2020 10:03

A colleague had this name and despite shortening it to Ginny was teased throughout her schooldays, sneered at - Virgin - as you can imagine. She had to grow a thick skin. She went to an all girls' school - can you imagine how much worse it would be with boys? I wouldn't lumber a child with that.

MyMomisaplumber · 13/09/2020 10:48

Imogen known as Ginny?

Sunbird24 · 13/09/2020 11:05

I’m not even pregnant yet, was just insomnia musings for the future while I’m at the start of an IVF cycle so there’s a whole lot of what if going on!
I appreciate all the responses, confirms what I thought too. It only popped into my head as I have a family member with the nickname and was thinking about other ways to get to it.

nutellatoast · 13/09/2020 11:05

Please don't call your daughter Virginia she will endlessly teased and called virgin.
If you like Ginny call her Ginny or Genevieve, Ginervra, Ginnifer, Imogen etc

ZebraKid71 · 13/09/2020 13:25

I absolutely love it!

itsjakeandamy · 13/09/2020 13:42

I usually think the "your child will be hideously bullied for their name" answers are over-the-top and sometimes ridiculous. This is one where I think they are true. If I meet an adult Virginia I wouldn't blink an eyelid. If my children were at school with one I think there would be other children who would constantly snigger or worse.
I like Genevieve or Ginevra as options. Even Geneva would work.

BabyLlamaZen · 13/09/2020 18:32

I prefer Ginevra

Holyrivolli · 13/09/2020 18:36

She’d get teased horribly at school about it. Virgin or Vagina. As a grown up it’s a lovely name - as a kid, just no.
