Hungarian names that work in the UK?

Hello, my husband and I are Hungarian and live in the UK. We are due in 12 days and want a name that works in Hungary and the UK without accents. For a girl we have decided on Eliza but we cannot choose for an idea. Our surname is Bartus.

I wouldn't have a clue what a Hungarian name is! Could you tell us some you like and we can tell you how they sound to a British ear?

bartuki · 12/09/2020 19:46

My son is half-Hungarian and Leo works well. Other names...Daniel? I wouldn't go for Csaba or Attila though Smile

Maybe also...Sam, Joszef (not sure if Hungarian spelling is right), Lucas (sorry can't remember Hungarian spelling), Andras. I had toyed with Krisztof and still really like it. Kristian also maybe?

My partner is Hungarian and we wanted a Hungarian name that also worked in English so we have a Szofi and a Zoltán. I always get positives about Zoli although some people miss hear and think its Oli (as in short for oliver).
We have quick a few Hungarian friends who live here and in my experience
Imre (Imi) most english people cant pronounce cos they cant roll the r.
Levente (Levi) is fine thou everyone pronounces it like the Jean's the first time and has to be corrected!
Erik and Dominik both work in terms of being pronounced right first time.
Sandór always prounced wrong.
Benji is fine but personally I think sounds a bit childish on an older man.
We found boys names much harder to pick than girls ones, we just went through the 'book of names' til we found one.

(I've NC for this seen as I mentioned my kids names)

ahola · 13/09/2020 07:45

Just avoid Szabolcs!

TheVanguardSix · 13/09/2020 07:55

I know two Attilas, one is at school with my children and I absolutely love this name. I love the name Attila.

Erno is another name I love.

Hungarians I know.

MorelloKisses · 13/09/2020 08:35

Do you want it to be identifiably ‘not English’ but pronounceable, understandable eg Viktor

Or totally ambiguous origin e.g. Daniel?

Billben · 13/09/2020 08:39

The trouble with MÁTÉ would be that people will be pronouncing it as mate. It’s a lovely name in Hungarian though.
