I'd pronounce it ANNyah.

Other people pronounce it AHN-yah.

It's a nice name.

formerbabe · 07/09/2020 16:26

Ann yah

I love it...beautiful name

Flymetothestars · 07/09/2020 16:31

Love it. One of my favs and so underused

Agree with definitions above Anne-Ya

MikeUniformMike · 07/09/2020 16:58

Ann-ya

It's fine. I prefer Ann or Anna but it's perfectly nice.

Unseeliequeen · 07/09/2020 17:11
  1. Very similar to the agna of lasagna
  2. I like it, think it's sweet, automatically think of lasagna though so wouldn't use it personally.
PurplePansy05 · 07/09/2020 17:13

It's an anglicised version of a Polish nickname Ania (Anna). Personally, I don't like foreign names being appropriated in English and vice versa. It just looks weird.

ZebraKid71 · 07/09/2020 18:08

I like Anya a lot, it was on my list for dd1 but I'm glad we didn't use it as her best friend is an Anya! I know a few under 3 and 1 who is about 50. It suits them all.

Viletta · 07/09/2020 18:10

Imo Anya is short for Anna, pronounced as Ahn-iya sounds like a lovely Slavic name to me.

WeLovePeaSoup · 07/09/2020 18:11

It’s Mummy in Hungarian ☺️

VenusClapTrap · 07/09/2020 18:13

Ann-yer. Like the potato.

SorrelBlackbeak · 07/09/2020 18:32

Anya in Buffy the Vampire Slayer is pretty awesome.

Sanblasamor · 07/09/2020 18:35

Ann-ya
I love it

SeanCailleach · 07/09/2020 22:25

Anya with short a
I thonk it's used for the Irish name Aine which is kind of pronounced the same.

CaffiSaliMali · 08/09/2020 11:25

I know a Norwegian Anya who pronounces it Ann-ya.

I think it's lovely and it has an international feel. Anna is also lovely and similarly international.

Flynn999 · 08/09/2020 11:40

Pronounce it Ann-ya

I’ve heard it a few times (Tv characters etc) and I’m assuming it’s Eastern European.

hamblebamble · 08/09/2020 20:44

Arnia. I know an Anya and she's fab.

Newgirl20 · 09/09/2020 00:29

I have a similar one on my list but mine is enya

micc · 09/09/2020 04:17

I love Anya! My DD was almost Anastasia and we would call her Anya. I loved the movie growing up Haha. I also worked with an Anya and loved her name. Everyone did say Ann-Ya, but I believe it has Russian routes, I think they would pronounce it more Ahn-ya. Either way its so gorgeous.

Onehotmess · 09/09/2020 04:58

Aine is pronounced more like Ah nya. I would say Ann-ya for Anya but actually prefer Ah nya 🙈👍🏻

Mavedrai · 09/09/2020 05:07

I pronounce it AHN-ya. I love the name -- simple but pretty. As PP said, it has an international feel. I have only known Indian or Slavic Anyas, but I think it would work in many different cultures.

DespairingHomeowner · 09/09/2020 06:13

Like the name - have a Swedish colleague with the name

It’s also one of the most popular names in Indian commmunity in uk for little girls

August20 · 09/09/2020 07:32

I would say Ahn-yah unless corrected to something else.

I quite like it but thought it was a nickname.

joystir59 · 09/09/2020 07:37

Prefer Anna

Okbutnotgreat · 09/09/2020 07:41

I know 2 50ish year olds called Anya and think it’s a lovely name. It hasn’t dated at all like so many of their peers.

EnjoyingTheSilence · 09/09/2020 07:41

I love it and would have used it but I knew everyone would pronounce it Ann- ya, whereas I prefer Ahn-ya, as in Buffy. Fab name
