Baby boy name

Babynamehoward · 07/09/2020 15:09

Baby boy due very soon, the only two names DH and I can agree on are:

Nathan (DH likes, I think I could grow to like but certainly not in love with it)

Or William ( I love, DH not sure because he knows a few Wills that he's not a fan of but I think he will eventually forget about them)

Middle name would be Edward

DD is Elizabeth Florence

Interested in Opinions, Or both awful?

I prefer William

Flymetothestars · 07/09/2020 15:35

Both lovely names, difficult to pick!
Nathan more unusual

Pippilangstrumpfi · 07/09/2020 15:45

Nathan

William contains Willi and is very teasable.

IggyAce · 07/09/2020 15:48

I prefer Nathaniel to Nathan, but out of Nathan and William I would pick Nathan.

Babynamehoward · 07/09/2020 15:56

Interesting that so far Nathan seems better, a lot of threads I've read hate the name Nathan, but never sure why

DH definitely doesn't like Nathaniel, I prefer Ethan to Nathan but he doesn't like that either

I think it's the shortening to Nate, which I'm pretty sure DH will do, that's bothering me

I prefer William and I think it sounds nicer with Elizabeth.

17caterpillars1mouse · 07/09/2020 16:42

I don't like Nathan as I once knew one who was a jerk. I love Nathaniel though, shame he doesn't like it

I like William and although it's popular I only know 3 ( mids 20s, 18 and just under 2)

AdaColeman · 07/09/2020 16:56

Nathan.
More unusual than William, Nathan Edward works well, and Nate or Natt are fine as nn. I'm not keen on Ethan, though it seems popular.

Unseeliequeen · 07/09/2020 17:14

Nathan.

emmathedilemma · 07/09/2020 17:32

William Edward, good classic name and goes really well with Elizabeth.

ifiwasascent · 07/09/2020 17:56

Really really dislike Nathan. It's just a harsh sounding name to me. William and elizabeth go far better than Elizabeth and Nathan IMO

Standrewsschool · 07/09/2020 17:56

Prefer Nathaniel to Nathan.

William is a good solid name.

TheVanguardSix · 07/09/2020 18:03

William and Elizabeth sound much nicer together. And no! He will not be called 'Willi' and get teased mercilessly! My kids have gone to school with Williams and they've always been called William or Will. My nephew is a William (Liam- Irish mother).
Nathaniel was mentioned above and that too is a good, solid name. Much nicer than Nathan.
Give kids some credit! I think we have this idea that they run around teasing each other about their names all the time. They don't. They really don't. And the kids that do are usually a bit dragged up anyway.

Astronica · 08/09/2020 05:01

I much prefer William. Nathaniel is better than Nathan.
Where I live Nathan was very common in the 1980s. Still has a very much over-used 80s naughty boy feel to me.

If you can't agree on either of these is there another name that you both like? Just don't end up agreeing to a name that you don't like, then coming back here in a few months with name regret ('I was talked into it...'). Keep looking until you can agree on something that you love.

Chocolatecake12 · 08/09/2020 07:38

Go back to the drawing board because neither of you loves the others name.
How about Edward as the first name?
Or
Robert
Jacob
Thomas
Isaac
Henry
Alexander
Hugo
Benjamin
Daniel
In my opinion Nathan is the nicest name but there’s nothing wrong with William. It’s also a nice name! Are you planning on basing your decision on a panel of Mumsnettters?

Babynamehoward · 08/09/2020 07:58

We can't have Edward as a first name as DD is Ellie and don't want Ellie and Eddie (nephew Freddie, feels too comical)

We've been through a million names and they are the only two possibilities tbh.

All of the suggestions there have been considered and ruled out for various reasons.

I'm not going to make my final decision on the advice of mumsnet no, but I'm curious to see if there's anything I haven't considered for or against either name

William is great. I love Will as a nn. All the Williams I know are just lovely.
I'm not a huge fan of Nathan as a name but it's not a rational dislike - I just dislike the sound of it (also don't like Ethan). I absolutely love Nathaniel (and the nn Nate or Nat).

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 08/09/2020 08:35

William

Or agree with pp Nathaniel is much nicer than Nathan.

Heh1991 · 09/09/2020 01:40

William, definitely!

alexdgr8 · 09/09/2020 02:01

William

Or agree with pp Nathaniel is much nicer than Nathan.

ditto
Oysterbabe · 09/09/2020 06:14

William and Elizabeth is a bit too much royalty for me. I'd go with Nathan.

Viletta · 12/09/2020 23:56

I think you should ask someone who's choice is similar to your taste. Here you never know there are people who give negative opinions on names and then you find out they like something that you find awful. I like both of your choices.

Lollypop4 · 13/09/2020 00:00

prefer William.
Ive 2 friends named Nathan, nn Nath. Both born mid 80s

Puffalicious · 13/09/2020 00:06

Like PP William and Elizabeth far too.royal. Nathaniel is lovely.

Sebastian?
Matthew?
Torquil?
Daniel?
Fergus?
Cameron?

LoveLanky · 13/09/2020 01:44

Elle and Eddie is better than Elizabeth and William (way too royal).
