DC2 due in a few weeks, sex unknown.
Already have a Joseph.

Have listed them in order of preference to me.

Girls options
Tilda (or should it be Matilda?)
Marianne
Marina
Erin
Adeline

Middle name would be Annie or Dotty/Dorothy

Boys options
Ellis
Finn
Lewis
Luke

Middle name would be Antony.

I love Annie and there is something oddly appealing about Dorothy. I also love Matilda. I don't like any of your boys names I'm afraid.

whatausername · 05/09/2020 10:53

Ellis or Luke for boy. Luke Anthony flows slightly better if that bothers you.

Girls - I think Dorothy goes better than Annie does with most of those names. Marina is refreshing, not too many around atm. Not keen on Tilda as a standalone, it sounds half-baked somehow!? And Marina, Marianne and Erin are nicer/stronger than Adeline. Adeline is okay but not as nice as the others.

PlateTectonics · 05/09/2020 10:56

I like all your girls names! Not so keen on the boys, except Luke which is lovely.

IslandLulu · 05/09/2020 10:56

Marina and Luke

BingThing · 05/09/2020 11:16

I love Adeline (I also love Adina) and Marianne. Out of your boy options I would chose Finn.

MikeUniformMike · 05/09/2020 11:28

Tilda (or should it be Matilda?) - not keen on Tilda, it's a brand of rice, and similar to Hilda. Matilda is overused
Marianne - fine, but I don't like it when it's said as Marry Ann.
Marina - lovely
Erin - it's ok but likely to be popular. A bit nothingy and harsh sounding.
Adeline - don't like it at all

Ellis - fine but will get the nn Elsie
Finn - naughty boy name. I like it though. Flynn and Finley also popular
Lewis - ok, Louis and Louie Hmm very popular.
Luke - ok but Lucas and Luca are popular

I love Annie and Dorothy/Dot/Dotty - use Dorothy as a first name. Dorothy Antonia. Or use Annie as a first name - I know an Annie whose bc name is Antonia.

I really like Antony - the spelling makes me think of Tony Benn.

MikeUniformMike · 05/09/2020 11:36

Of the boy's names, my favourite is Luke.
The names are a bit mild sounding apart from Finn.
I liked Finn but it's too popular now.

Flymetothestars · 05/09/2020 11:41

LOVE Ellis
My current top boy name

Astronica · 05/09/2020 12:56

Tilda is my first choice - I find it a strong and appealing variation of Matilda, and I think it's fine as a name on its own. Second choice, Marina. Marianne and Erin are okay. Dislike Adeline.
Tilda Dorothy or Marina Dorothy. Annie could be a nn for Marianne.

Lewis first choice for boy. I also like Finn. Lewis Antony and Finn Antony both sound good.

Unseeliequeen · 05/09/2020 13:03

Love Marina Dorothy and I can't decide on the boy names. Are there any other boy names you like?

whatausername · 05/09/2020 13:28

@MonkeyPuddle, have noticed I spelt Antony wrong - sorry, it wasn't a slight!

MonkeyPuddle · 05/09/2020 13:50

I used up the only boy name I truly loved with DS which does make it harder, but we also had James, William, Fraser and Thomas on the list.
Plus I’ve got the feeling this baby is a girl, which I know is daft!
Middle names are set, Annie after my mum or Dotty/Dorothy after my grandma and Antony is DP’s grandad.

Matilda / Tilly but not Tilda!
Not keen on your other girls names, they're a bit frilly for me and I don't think they're classic enough to go with joseph.
I like all your boys names but would favour Lewis and Finn.

EmilySpinach · 05/09/2020 20:18

Marianne - fine, but I don't like it when it's said as Marry Ann.

This is the only pronunciation I have encountered; what’s the alternative?

MikeUniformMike · 05/09/2020 20:33

MAR-ee-ann, it's subtle but the difference is that one is pretty and the other is frumy

Like Marion, Madeleine, Meredith, Pamela or Angela or Erica or Monica can feel like there's a song in there

Imagine someone saying Marion as Marry On, Madeleine as Maddy Lane or Monica as Monny Ca.

MikeUniformMike · 05/09/2020 20:34

frumpy even.

MikeUniformMike · 05/09/2020 20:37

www.google.com/search?q=translate+french+to+english&rlz=1C1OKWM_enGB793GB793&oq=translate&aqs=chrome.2.69i57j69i59j0l6.5751j0j7&sourceid=chrome&ie=UTF-8

That should be the translate for it. if you listen to both, you'll hear it.

EmilySpinach · 05/09/2020 20:51

Ah, I see. I'll have to disagree with you there. The Sense & Sensibility 'marry-ann' pronunciation is my preference. I find self-consciously French pronunciations rather affected if there's no French link (nearly said connection!).

Tillygetsit · 06/09/2020 00:08

I love love love Marianne. Not so keen on your boy's names tbh.

Newgirl20 · 06/09/2020 04:13

Girls options
Tilda (or should it be Matilda?) sisters name is Matilda spelt differently, you're a copycat, she was named this before its popularity, pick a more unique namd
Marianne great name variant of Marie
Marina not fave but like
Erin love but popular like Tilda now
Adeline no

Middle name would be Annie or Dotty/Dorothy if Tilda then Tilda Dorothy, Marianne dotty, same for erin

Boys options
Ellis hate
Finn favourite
Lewis no
Luke second favd

Torvean32 · 06/09/2020 04:20

I like Matilda and Erin ( i know a Maltida nn Tillie)

Like all your boys names except Lewis.

TheFormerPorpentinaScamander · 06/09/2020 04:47

I love Matilda Dorothy.
Lewis is my all time favourite boys name.

len1234 · 06/09/2020 05:17

Adeline, Finn & Luke are my favorites from your list!

MrsBungle · 06/09/2020 05:29

I like all of your girls names except Matilda/Tilda. Love Marina.

I also like all of your boys names! You say you had Fraser on your list - I like that best.

MonkeyPuddle · 06/09/2020 09:19

A real mixed bag of opinions then!
Marianne would be pronounced Marry Ann, no French connection for us, we’re Yorkshire folk with the accent to match!
