Spelling and middle name help

DH and I are down to 3 first names for our girl. However we can't decide on the spelling of Blair/Blaire. I say Blair, he says it's Blaire. Which one do you prefer?

And any middle name suggestion would be greatly appreciated. We are at a loss here, we have no preference or any honour names we would like to use but have been struggling to find one we like. We have even thought of going with no middle name.

Blair. Lonely name

Thefaceofboe · 28/08/2020 19:26

Lovely Blush

Blar in Gaelic (with a grave accent over the a - sloping high to the left and low to the right) means 'field' or 'meadow'. It's a common word on (eg) signposts or street names in the Gaelic-speaking Highlands, very similar to 'Field' in England.

The English-language version is usually 'Blair' and usually a surname.

Just from my own point of view, I would not want to name a child 'field' because a child is is a human, not a piece of land.

But each to their own....

mylittleavalon · 28/08/2020 19:36

I have seen it spelt Blair more often. How many syllables is your surname? Might help us in suggestions. How about: Blair Juliette, Blair Cassidy, Blair Penelope, Blair Fern, Blair Abigail, Blair Emmeline?

msflibble · 28/08/2020 19:38

I'd pop that e on the end otherwise it would remind me of the Blair Witch

mylittleavalon · 28/08/2020 19:38

Blair Evangeline, Blair Antoinette to add as well

MikeUniformMike · 28/08/2020 19:38

Don't like it. It sounds like Blare.

msflibble · 28/08/2020 19:38

oh god and Tony Blair!

go with Blaire, 100%

BingoGo · 28/08/2020 19:40

I'd say Blaire. Blaire Estelle

peajotter · 28/08/2020 19:53

Blaire is clearly feminine, Blair is unisex, if that makes any difference to you.

It’s easier to say “blaire with an e” than “blair without an e” when spelling it out to people.

Why not use one of your other first names as a middle name? Do they scan ok? It gives your child more choice if for some reason they end up hating their first name or it becomes the name of a pop star.

cheeseychovolate · 28/08/2020 19:55

Blaire-Marie I'd hyphen it because some people may not know if it's a girl or boy.

daisypond · 28/08/2020 20:00

It’s a surname. Neither look right. I’d assume a boy for both.

AnnaSW1 · 28/08/2020 20:00

I only know it as a boy's name. Spelt Blar

NannyR · 28/08/2020 20:03

Blaire looks more feminine, Blair could be ambiguous as to girl or boy and looks like a surname.

florascotia2 · 28/08/2020 20:05

As Daisy says, it's a surname. Putting an e on the end does not make it feminine.

As I said above, iBlar/Blair a Gaelic word meaning 'field'. In its English-language spelling, it's used as a Scottish surname.

If you would name a girl 'Field' in English, then I suppose you could name a girl 'Blair'. But for heaven's sake, don't add extra 'e's in an attempt to femininise things. That just looks illiterate.

undecidedforever · 28/08/2020 20:07

Our other top first names are Greer and Holland. I know they're not mumsnet favourites but they've just ticked all our boxes.

I do like Blair Holland, haven't run it past DH yet. Surname starts with S (3 syllables, ends with an A)

Blair Evangeline is lovely, thanks for that suggestion. I hadn't actually made much of the association to Tony Blair, we did consider it but thought it wasn't THAT bad.

But Meadow is used as a girls name. I’m not saying I like it, but as far as using nouns for names goes, Blair is not that different.
ivfdreaming · 28/08/2020 20:23

It's already an "odd" name so I would spell it as conventionally as possible otherwise it just comes as across somewhere between chavvy and pretentious. Not to mention your child will spend their lifetime having to spell it out for people

Holland is just awful - everyone will think that's where she was conceived 🤷‍♀️

florascotia2 · 28/08/2020 20:28

Bike I'm afraid that I'm not a fan of Meadow as a name either. It has a very particular agricultural meaning, and just seems odd to use it as a name. It's a bit like calling a child any other random noun - such as 'chair' or 'bucket' or 'pasture' or 'silage'.

Others may disagree, and that is absolutely their right, of course.

june2007 · 28/08/2020 20:42

Is it with an E for a girl/ The Blair I know is a boy,.

emmathedilemma · 28/08/2020 20:48

Atholl as a middle name??

florascotia2 · 28/08/2020 20:48

june Would you add 'e' to Meadow or 'e' to Field to make them feminine?

Blar (anglicised as Blair) simply does not have an 'e' at the end.

Firebird83 · 28/08/2020 20:52

Blair. Blair just looks like a misspelling.

Firebird83 · 28/08/2020 20:53

*Blaire!

florascotia2 · 28/08/2020 20:57

Emma Well, exactly. Blair Atholl (a very famous Scottish place name ) = Athol's field or Athol's meadow.
