Spelling and middle name help

undecidedforever · 28/08/2020 19:20

DH and I are down to 3 first names for our girl. However we can't decide on the spelling of Blair/Blaire. I say Blair, he says it's Blaire. Which one do you prefer?

And any middle name suggestion would be greatly appreciated. We are at a loss here, we have no preference or any honour names we would like to use but have been struggling to find one we like. We have even thought of going with no middle name.

I LOVE the name Blair for a girl. But I had two boys so couldn't use it.

BikeRunSki · 28/08/2020 21:40

I know what you mean @florascotia2, I'm a geologist and I don't understand why Savanah is used as a name, to me, its a very specific type of environment.

EnidMatilda · 28/08/2020 21:44

I like the name. It makes me think of Gossip Girl (American TV series) and her name was spelt Blair. I think Blaire looks like an incorrect spelling.

mylittleavalon · 28/08/2020 21:57

Glad you like Evangeline. Thinking three or four syllables sound best with a soft ending to offset the very short sound of Blair/e, only other four syllables that fit that bill I could think of were Felicity and Persephone. But just looked up Blair from gossip girls middle name (sad I know) and it's Cordelia if that helps!!

percheron67 · 28/08/2020 21:59

Surname. Enough said.

whatausername · 28/08/2020 22:22

Blaire is horrendous. I echo a PP who said adding an e doesn't make it look feminine, rather it makes the parents look illiterate. I'd veto your DH on that spelling asap.

whatausername · 28/08/2020 22:26

And I like the suggestion of Evangeline. Blair Holland sounds like a firm of some kind rather than a woman. I'd expect a connection to the region or it to be some kind of honour (sur)name if I discovered it were someone's middle name and would be interested to hear the backstory. Then I'd be disinterested when the owner of the name said it was merely because their parents liked odd words as names.

perfumeistooexpensive · 28/08/2020 22:33

I certainly don't share your taste in names. Blair just makes me think of Tony Blair. It's not a girl's name to me. Greer is a surname too. Germaine Greer. Holland is a name that a friend in the US has called his daughter. I think it's terrible. Sorry.

BeMorePacific · 28/08/2020 22:40

I know a Greer and she absolutely hates her name. I’d really avoid it! x

UsernameNotValid · 28/08/2020 22:51

Blair is a common name here (NE Scotland) I've never seen it spelt any other way and I've never heard anyone mention the "field" thing before, even from Gaelic speaking friends... I really wouldn't worry about that!

I was at school with a Greir, she had bad skin and lank hair so she was "Greasy Greir" for almost 5 years. Bit specific I know but for that reason I couldn't use it.

DramaAlpaca · 28/08/2020 23:00

Blaire sounds like someone with a bad cold trying to say Claire.

Blair is the more usual spelling but it's a surname and I'd see it as a boys' name.

Tillygetsit · 28/08/2020 23:32

I'm very sorry but Blair/Blaire to me soundslike someone vomiting. Greer is really harsh and Holland is daft. Obviously we don't share the same taste at all.

whatausername · 29/08/2020 00:14

In case my PP doesn't read how I meant it, I mean Blair Evangeline works and is nicer than Blair Holland.

undecidedforever · 29/08/2020 03:50

Thanks for the comments, I understand some of you are not too keen on it but it really is kind of our top choice at the moment, we are only debating on the middle name. DH is almost fully convinced that Blair is the way to go.

We are really liking Blair Evangeline and Blair Alexandra at the moment.

Prettybluepigeons · 29/08/2020 04:01

It sounds like bleurgh to me. A pukey noise.

Alexandra and Evangaline are lovely. Have one of them as first name as bleurgh as second name so she can pretend it doesn't exist.

4kidmom · 29/08/2020 06:09

I’m in the United States and I’ve only known it as a girl name. I prefer the Blaire spelling. It looks more complete to me. I love both Evangeline and Alexandra as middle names.

june2007 · 29/08/2020 15:14

Prettybluepidgeons I agree. And the comment about the E was because i had never seen blair spelt with an e at the end but only knew it as a boys name. The fact it means field I say so what, you can be called river, skye, Forest why not field?

AlwaysLatte · 29/08/2020 15:24

Reminds me of Tony Blair, or Blair Witch Project, but then even with an e it would!

zigaziga · 29/08/2020 17:13

Blaire-Marie I'd hyphen it because some people may not know if it's a girl or boy.

I feel like this would be the absolute worst option.

Blaire just looks weird (and with a hyphen even worse!), Blair is the correct spelling as far as I know. I quite like it as a first name.

zigaziga · 29/08/2020 17:13

And I think Alexandra and Evangeline are equally good, it needs a long middle I think.

undecidedforever · 29/08/2020 18:02

DH is finally on board with the Blair spelling. We have finally decided on that. If we are already choosing a very surname and unisex name we might as well go with the most natural spelling. Still trying to decide on a very feminine middle to try and avoid confusion due to it being unisex (and more of a boys name in the UK)

As for the hyphen suggestion, we are definitely not keen on that. I think a unisex first with a more feminine/masculine middle name definitely does the trick. And I like the option of them being separate names in case DD isn't a big fan of either of them.

Now off to finding a middle name...

Bearcub01 · 30/08/2020 09:01

Blair is on my list. Blair for a boy, Blaire for a girl.

I just don’t really like how it sounds in a Scottish accent - bler

ImaSababa · 30/08/2020 09:13

Blair and Greer sound like vomiting.

Holland is quite glamorous. I like it.

namenerd · 30/08/2020 10:46

I personally think Blaire has a much girlier feel to it if that's what you're going for.
My middle name suggestions are:
Blaire Matilda, Blaire Evangeline, Blaire Julietta, Blaire Clementine, Blaire Delilah and Blaire Rosetta ❤

msflibble · 30/08/2020 19:24

Greer always reminds me of grease. Or greed. I'm not a fan I'm afraid.

Holland is cool. I knew a Scottish girl called Holland and it worked for her. If your DD doesn't like it she can shorten it to Holly.
