What do people think of the name Penelope and Penny for short?
Has anyone got any suggestions of similar names? Preferably one that can be shortened :)

I love it, it’s on my list. Apparently it’s popular now but I’ve never met any

AdelaidePlace · 23/08/2020 00:19

I was thinking today about a name I love .. Juliette, with the NN Ettie or Lettie, would that work?

Mumoflittles · 23/08/2020 00:21

I LOVE it. Its my DD,s middle name. I wanted it for her first name but it really didnt go with both of my boys names.

DramaAlpaca · 23/08/2020 00:22

I love Penelope. I met a toddler Penelope a while back and I thought it was just lovely.

SE13Mummy · 23/08/2020 01:45

I think Penelope is a great name although I prefer Nell as a nickname. Felicity, Dorothy, Clementine, Cecily, Daphne and Helena feel similar.

August20 · 23/08/2020 05:03

I really like it, I only know two people called Penelope, one is 22 or 23 and the other is a toddler.

When you say similar names, do you mean longer names that can be shortened or do you mean Greek names?

Greek/Greek inspired:

Cassandra
Phoebe
Alexandra

Long names:

Elizabeth
Antonia
Victoria

It's a lovely name!!

Hannah12341234 · 23/08/2020 07:02

Thank you all for your replies. It is nice that so many of you like it.
@se13mummy I really like that nickname
@adelaideplace Juliet is such a lovely name too!
@august20 I love Alexandra but my husband isn't keen.
Thank you again for all the suggestions, it gives us lots to think about

It’s my daughter’s middle name, obviously I love it, and Penny for short too. Can’t think of a name like it! (Not helpful.)

MikeUniformMike · 23/08/2020 09:15

It's ok, but I don't get the MN love for it.

Philippa might be an alternative.

VenusClapTrap · 23/08/2020 10:06

I’m not keen. How about

Minerva
Marjolaine
Nerina
Anneliese

diddlediddle · 23/08/2020 11:35

Love

Jj2431 · 24/08/2020 03:11

Don't like it. Just think pit stop

Christmastree43 · 24/08/2020 03:13

Very popular at the minute, comes up on every MN thread and I have two baby Penelopes in my NCT group (born June/ July). Also a Kardashian name!

Laaalaaaa · 24/08/2020 07:34

Made popular after a kardashian used it. You never heard of it for children before that.

sweetnosugar · 24/08/2020 08:53

I know one Penelope, but that’s all. I think it’s a great name.

I like Theodora/Thea too. ☺️

Hannah12341234 · 24/08/2020 21:45

Ahh now I don't know what to do. I didn't know there was a Kardashian with the name 🙈 and I didn't realise it was now really popular :(
@sweetnosugar I LOVE Theodora but my niece is called that so can't use it 😅

Love Penelope nn Penny- never met one

Similar-ish suggestions

Clementine nn Clemmie
Ottilie nn Ottie
Jemima
Edith nn Edie

Whatsyourflava · 24/08/2020 23:55

Margaret nn Maggie

MikeUniformMike · 25/08/2020 10:10

I know at least four Penelopes nn Penny and a Pennie who is just Pennie.
All are older than 40.

I thought that a certain actress had made it popular again

Herja · 25/08/2020 10:16

I have one. Everyone on here says it's popular, but she's getting older now, I live in a big city and have still only ever met a couple in her life.

I named her on the back of the Penelopiad by Margaret Attwood. I also considered Seraphina, Sylvia, Phoebe, Ottilie and Persephone if any are any use? I have been told I pick ridiculous and wanky names though... Grin.

daisypond · 25/08/2020 10:17

I like it, but I don’t like Penny. It gets mentioned on here quite a lot, so I suspect it’s getting popular.

FunnyItWorkedLastTime · 25/08/2020 10:27

Lovely name, but like all those Greek myth names it travels very badly outside Europe so that’s something you might want want to consider. (A mate of mine who works internationally is called Penelope and has had her name massacred by officials all the way across Asia).

burritofan · 25/08/2020 10:41

Inside Europe too: DP’s aunt used to get called Penny-lope (to rhyme with mope) a lot by people who’d only ever seen it written down.

sunyla · 25/08/2020 17:50

I love Penelope!
