Brazil?

Thoughts on “Brazil” for a baby girl? No middle name, as Brazil in itself is kinda “out there” and uncommon, I think a middle name would be overkill. I hated it when my boyfriend mentioned it originally, but it’s actually grown on me. I know a ton of London’s, Asia’s, Ireland’s, etc.

Just call her fagina I'm sure that's acceptable not common either

Whatthebloodyell · 22/08/2020 18:59

An interesting name does not make you an interesting person.

And even if you chose the top name, your child still wouldn’t end up being one of 12 in her class. Common names aren’t actually as common as you imagine. So you don’t need to try quite so hard to be cool.

HairDilemmas · 22/08/2020 18:59

Grey and Greer, I love both.

Bloomburger · 22/08/2020 18:59

XGOLDEN there are actually lots of threads with nice names, I've never seen threads recommend calling your child Andrew or Elizabeth unless people have asked for a name from a particular era.

There's the problem of being different for different's sake, if you hailed from South America maybe you could get away with it but otherwise it's awful.

XGOLDEN · 22/08/2020 18:59

*I forgot to mention that I’m American, so I am still getting used to how straightforward UK users are lol. I didn’t consider that at first. My apologies if I offended anyone.

@HairDilemmas

Grey and Greer, I love both.
My bf hates both of those names, but I think they’re darling

What is your connection to Brazil?

Saffron is nice.
Greer is OK - it has a dreary feel to me, though, but that’s the sound of it.
Grey is very bland and boring.

giletrouge · 22/08/2020 19:02

Greer is a great idea - after Greer Garson 1940s star who played strong women.
Good choice OP.

SingleHandSue · 22/08/2020 19:04

Greer is gorgeous.

HairDilemmas · 22/08/2020 19:04

They are both miles and miles better than bloody Brazil.

Flynn999 · 22/08/2020 19:04

-Grey - if I say this I’d assume it was short for greyson and therefor a boys name.
-Greer - never heard it as a name, or even a word. Looks a bit like grrrrrrr to me. Not sure why but looks like a boys name.
-Saffron - Not keen, but at least it’s an actual name.

Brazil IMO doesn’t seem like a great name for a girl. If you love it and have connections to either the nut/wax/country use as a middle name. I really don’t think it works as a day-to-day name. I think the Yorkshire dales are beautiful, I didn’t inflict the name on my child 🤷‍♀️.

You can easily give you child an unusual name without giving her something that will cause her to be teased.

Lelophants · 22/08/2020 19:05

Bra for short? Zilla? People will get used to it but they will also think it's chavvy.
Why not pick something you like not follow your boyfriend?

Scotstar · 22/08/2020 19:05

Since when has Andrew, Ann , Elizabeth etc been recommended and seen as common???

I have a 3yo Andrew and hardly ever see the name on here.

ballsdeep · 22/08/2020 19:06

@SpangleBug

I think a middle name would be overkill.

Nut would work nicely.

This just made me spit my tea out!
Lelophants · 22/08/2020 19:06

Have you been there? If you want a beautiful country name maybe pick something like Roma (Rome) or Genoa or loads of beautiful Italian cities.

Lelophants · 22/08/2020 19:07

And if you give her a middle name she can use that if she prefers when she gets jobs when she's older.

nachthexe · 22/08/2020 19:07

Brasil/ Brazil/ Saffron are ‘common’ in entirely the wrong way (if you are American, you might find ‘trailer trash’ or ‘redneck’ the right way to explain them).
Greer is fine.
I actually don’t know anyone under 40 called Elisabeth, Andrew, Anne, lol, let alone see them recommended in here. You might be confusing internal stereotypes about English names with reality (in exactly the same way that I discuss trailer trash/ red neck names).
Either way, Brasil/ Brazil is terrible and you will be judged. And it won’t be for not conforming.

Lelophants · 22/08/2020 19:08

an American city then?

Outwithreason · 22/08/2020 19:09

Saffron with the nickname Saffie is lovely.

Do you like in America? If so, maybe Brazil is ok. If in the UK, I wouldn't go for anything that can be shortened to Bra or have jokes made about like nuts or waxing. Think of her teenage years!

thedancingbear · 22/08/2020 19:12

What about Paraguay OP?

EmmaJR1 · 22/08/2020 19:13

You sound like you've made up your mind OP.

At least give your child a middle name so she has choices in the future.

CaptainCorellisPangolin · 22/08/2020 19:17

Look, this is almost certainly a windup but, on the off chance that some poor kid is actually going to end up being called Brazil, please don't do this. Please. You trying to be "zany" or "unique" does not help your child AT ALL. No one is going to think
"Ooh, Brazil! What cool and free thinking parents she must have!"
They're going to think
"Poor little sod, being used as a vanity project from day one."

Diverseduvet · 22/08/2020 19:17

I'd be amused if I heard a child with that name and just think 'try hard' yawn yawn. Giving your child a 'cool' name doesn't make them cool! In fact just the opposite. As a teacher the amount of children with out there names which just don't suit them, or that have problems which give them extra attention is massive.

CrazyToast · 22/08/2020 19:17

Listen to 'A Boy Named Sue' by Johnny Cash...

“Roma” is actually beautiful!! I like that!
