I have nowhere else to ask but I quite like the name. We don't actually know what we are having but if it's a girl, we quite like 'Winnie' as a nickname. I'm just not sure if Winifred sounds far too Granny or the 'Fred' sounds too boyish.

Please be honest and brutal (if necessary)

I don't want her to grow up with a name she will hate, thank you Smile

Love it! Winifred Robinson broadcaster, Winifred Holtby author. She can be called Win, Winnie, Freddie. Smile

IsadoraQuagmire · 22/08/2020 11:48

I love it. I have an Aunt Winifred (Winnie)

Muser314 · 22/08/2020 11:50

I love it.

I would definitely use Winnie (but I like that Freda is a tenuous possibility as well.)

coffeeaddiction · 22/08/2020 11:51

Love it ! It's my great nans name which I intend to use if I ever have a girl , would probably be known as Winnie

Muser314 · 22/08/2020 11:51

Oh yes, just 'Win' is a lovely nn too

CherryValance · 22/08/2020 11:54

My gran was Winnie and hated it - pretty sure she’d have disliked Winnifred even more. It conjures up nuns to me - sorry! It sounds v old fashioned. That said, there is a model called Winnie so maybe it sounds cooler to younger ears

AllPlayedOut · 22/08/2020 11:59

It's awful. It's frumpy and unattractive.

anon5000 · 22/08/2020 12:01

Awful. She will hate it when she hits her teen years.

user1471459476 · 22/08/2020 12:02

Winnie the witch books are very popular for infant/junior school age children at the moment. It may be a nickname of Winnie that you hadn’t thought of

CovidSadness · 22/08/2020 12:06

I like traditional names but Winifred is a step too far for me, it has such a harsh sound. Winnie as a MN is too close to whiny for me and maybe used in a bullying way by older children.

CovidSadness · 22/08/2020 12:08

nn not MN thanks autocorrect

Whatthebloodyell · 22/08/2020 12:08

A good name for a dog.

Elouera · 22/08/2020 12:09

Sorry not a fan. I can imagine being teased 'Winnie the Pooh'. I also think of an elderly women and dont like the sound of 'Winnie'. Sounds whiny, short and sharp- sorry.

MikeUniformMike · 22/08/2020 12:13

My first thought was Winifred Robinson on You and Yours.
I had an Auntie Winnie (not my real aunt) and I know a Win.

It's cute.

AgeLikeWine · 22/08/2020 12:14

Awful. It’s an old lady name, and not in a good way.

DioneTheDiabolist · 22/08/2020 12:15

I love it. It reminds me of Mrs Tembe.❤

Giraffey1 · 22/08/2020 12:16

Afraid I don’t like it. It is very old fashioned.would I like to be called it? No!

Spied · 22/08/2020 12:16

Really awful. I'd hate to be called Winifred.

HaveAtEm · 22/08/2020 12:16

Not for me OP, sorry. I can't think of any way to make it sound nice when I say it out loud (and Winifred is awful).

I think in primary school she'd might be be ok, especially early on, but further up, or in high school? Well, children can be cruel can't they (despite what the 'woke' MN crowd like to think and say on here...they are!!) and yes, we can talk about 'teaching them to be kinder' until we are blue in the face, but it will still happen, won't it?

There are thousands and thousands of names...nobody can honestly say, hand on heart, that they can only think of 'this one' for their newborn.

DrDetriment · 22/08/2020 12:17

Ghastly. Sorry.

Spied · 22/08/2020 12:18

She'll not thank you when all her mates have lovely, pretty names and she's the 'Winnie'.

SwedishEdith · 22/08/2020 12:18

I've an Auntie Winnie as well. It's dreadful - so frumpy.

Tavannach · 22/08/2020 12:19

Don't like it, sorry.

formerbabe · 22/08/2020 12:23

I think Wini is sweet on a child or elderly woman but will sound silly in the middle years of life. Winifred is an ugly sound imo

bodgeitandscarper · 22/08/2020 12:27

I don't like it, sorry.
