I have nowhere else to ask but I quite like the name. We don't actually know what we are having but if it's a girl, we quite like 'Winnie' as a nickname. I'm just not sure if Winifred sounds far too Granny or the 'Fred' sounds too boyish.

Please be honest and brutal (if necessary)

I don't want her to grow up with a name she will hate, thank you Smile

Finding this thread fascinating one of my great-aunts was Winifred and picking up most dislike the name, whereas my grandmother was Ada which seems to be universally loved on her but she absolutely loathed her name

dollypops15 · 22/08/2020 19:23

I think its awful. Doesn't sound like a beautiful little child.

apricotdreams · 22/08/2020 19:25

Dreadful. Sorry.

Apple1971 · 22/08/2020 19:26

Really like it.

Lots of options for her to use different names too
Winnie
Freda
Freddie

And winifred when she wants to be serious.

CatteStreet · 22/08/2020 20:37

I've literally just posted on another thread that Winifred is hipster Grin

I'm not sure, tbh, but I think I come down on the side of liking it. It reminds me very much of the serious studious girl in Ballet Shoes who was a very talented actor/dancer/singer but always lost out to Pauline because of her (Pauline's) looks, although she needed the money at home Sad

Freddie is a sweet nickname for a girl.

mayandjuniper · 22/08/2020 20:55

Love it- and both Winnie and Freddie

Steppingonrakes · 22/08/2020 21:03

The only one I knew was in her 80s when I met her and she loathed her name. She always went by her middle name and all her family and friends called her by that.

vegansprinkle · 22/08/2020 21:05

My friend gave this name to her daughter, but spelt with double n. We all call her Winnie. Suits her very much, she is a lovely kid.

TheFormerPorpentinaScamander · 22/08/2020 21:07

I love it. But I love old lady names Grin

BinkyBoinky · 22/08/2020 21:08

Not keen, reminds me of an older, prissy aunt type, bit like a "Petunia" type of name. Could be just my imagination though.

SpeedofaSloth · 22/08/2020 21:11

No from me.

Whydoireadthis · 22/08/2020 21:29

I don’t understand when people say that kids will be picked on because of a name. I always figured that if you parent your child in a loving, secure way then they’ll be happy with whatever name you give them and will learn to not give two hoots whether somebody doesn’t like their name or not.
Winifred is lovely if that’s what you’ve decided on, it’s my God-daughter’s middle name ☺️

LilacSloth · 22/08/2020 21:34

I really don't like it. If you like Winnie as a nickname how do you feel about Winter? IMO it's sooo much nicer than Winifred.

Leelaseye · 22/08/2020 21:42

My very dear nana's name was Winifred ("Winnie"). We were tempted to use it for dd, but nana's reaction was "for gawd's sake don't do that to a child!"
I will always be fond of the name though because she was such an epic lady.

DipSwimSwoosh · 22/08/2020 22:13

I was pregnant at the same time as a friend. We discussed names and she wouldn't tell me her girls name as it was too good and I might steal it. She called the baby Winny. No chance I would've stolen it! There are hundreds of nicer names.

YouWereGr8InLittleMenstruators · 22/08/2020 22:17

Love it.

gnushoes · 22/08/2020 22:54

Christ, what's all the stuff with 'it sounds masculine' Do girls have to sound frilly? Honestly I think we've gone backwards in sexism.

Carouselfish · 22/08/2020 23:33

I like Winnie but don't like any of its longer versions.
Winifred makes me think Offred, as in Handmaid.

fantasmasgoria1 · 22/08/2020 23:35

It just reminds me of an elderly lady. It is way too frumpy a name.

17caterpillars1mouse · 23/08/2020 08:29

I really like it but I do think it won't be an easy to bear name in all situations. For example, nice little village school in a nice area with classmates called Felix, Ophelia and Clementine it would be fine. Tough, inner city secondary with classmates Lexi, Alfie and Neveah she will stand out like a sore thumb and probably have a rough time

Natt99 · 23/08/2020 08:29

I really like it. Considered it for our DD but DH vetoed. It seems that older people who have the name hate it but I think it's sweet for a baby nowadays and they'd probably own it. Makes a change from all the Ava, Mia's, Gracie etc
You should go for it if you like it!

DragonPie · 23/08/2020 08:31

My kids go to a lovely school in a nice area and we have an Alfie, Lexi and Neveah in DS’s class. Wink

DragonPie · 23/08/2020 08:33

Spelled Neveah wrong didn’t I. stupid name

MikeUniformMike · 23/08/2020 08:37

How does one pronounce Nevaeh?

StuntPond · 23/08/2020 08:38

I’d class it with Gladys, Mavis and Edna.
