Honest opinions.. Winifred

I have nowhere else to ask but I quite like the name. We don't actually know what we are having but if it's a girl, we quite like 'Winnie' as a nickname. I'm just not sure if Winifred sounds far too Granny or the 'Fred' sounds too boyish.

Please be honest and brutal (if necessary)

I don't want her to grow up with a name she will hate, thank you Smile

I love it. I would use Freddy as a nickname, though I do like Winnie as well.

Endlessmizzle · 22/08/2020 13:33

I like it but I’m firmly in the non frilly non ‘pretty’ names camp. I think Meredith is slightly similar and less contentious.

sweetnosugar · 22/08/2020 14:26

Adore it!
Love Winnie as a nickname. 😍

Mashingthecompost · 22/08/2020 17:46

Can't with this one. Nope.

niki26 · 22/08/2020 17:51

My daughter is at school with a Winnifred, known as Winnie. She is the most beautiful little girl and the name suits her perfectly. I love it!

Enderman · 22/08/2020 17:56

Ugly. She won’t thank you for it.

Annierose293 · 22/08/2020 18:13

Reminds me of my lovely neighbour as a child.

Bourbonbiccy · 22/08/2020 18:17

I have a little cousin called Winifred, just lovely

Flappingflamingo · 22/08/2020 18:18

I think winnie is cute

NeutralJanet · 22/08/2020 18:21

Immediately makes me think of Winifred Sanderson, I love Hocus Pocus but your daughter might not thank you for it.

DramaAlpaca · 22/08/2020 18:27

Honestly? It's awful. Winnie and Freda are ugly names too.

alexdgr8 · 22/08/2020 18:32

Yes. i like Winifred.
was the most caring and kind respectful nursing asst at UCH, elderly care. she was a star. hope she reads/ hears of this.
i also had a beloved sweet aunt called winifred.

and my partner's mother, who was known as freeda.

go for it. it has a fine pedigree. it is distinguished yet gentle.
and don't decide the nick names for your children. they will emerge organically, or they will choose them. don't take over everything in their lives.

Not too keen on Winifred but love Winnie and Freda

HairDilemmas · 22/08/2020 18:58

Brutal.

Winifred and Winnie are equally dire.

I always think with old names like this you should try introducing yourself to new people as Winifred (or whatever) and see if it feels clunky or awkward. Don't just saddle a kid with it when they're an abstraction; remember they'll be an 18 year old Winifred going off to uni and trying to pull at one point...

Bloomburger · 22/08/2020 19:01

Love it. Winnie is so cute.

rosinavera · 22/08/2020 19:04

I think Winnie is lovely too and if it's a boy Winston!

AuditAngel · 22/08/2020 19:05

As a child, we had a neighbour Freddie, who was actually Winifred.

daisypond · 22/08/2020 19:08

I actually like it.

Flynn999 · 22/08/2020 19:08

That was my grannies name. She fucking hated it. Insisted on being called by her slightly less hideous middle name.

It’s very old fashioned and as you mentioned the Fred part sounds quite masculine. If you go for Winnie as a nickname I’m sure the theme tune of Winnie the Pooh will be muttered under the breath of nasty little shits in the playground.

OhCaptain · 22/08/2020 19:10

I don’t think she’d thank you between them ages of 8 and 80!

Qwenzo · 22/08/2020 19:11

I teach a Winnie and at first I associated it with old people but it’s very cute on a small girl. No teasing at all about it.

riotlady · 22/08/2020 19:11

I love it! DP won’t let me use it though

Amortentia · 22/08/2020 19:14

No, it’s an awful old lady name. Speaking as someone who has an old lady first and middle name, don’t do it. I despair at the current fashion for resurrecting old fashioned names. They go out of fashion for a reason, let them die.

CremeEggThief · 22/08/2020 19:17

Nope, too old fashioned as a first name. It was my granny's first name (born mid-twenties), but she always went by a nickname that wasn't a short version of Winifred.

CremeEggThief · 22/08/2020 19:18

I don't mind Freda though.
