As they are due to come out next week I thought it would be fun to predict the names that have the biggest rise and the ones we think have fallen out of the top 10/20/100!

I think Arthur with have risen further along with Theodore/Theo/Teddy. I think Alfie will have dropped as I think it’s possibly feeling a little dated and is being replaced with Albie/Ronnie/Reggie type names.

I think Emily will fall out of the Top 5 and think A names will increase in popularity, I find girls names harder to predict.

If my area is anything to go by Penny's/Penelope will be on the up!

Viennasienna · 17/08/2020 12:50

I think Luna and Mila will have risen.
As well Ottilie, Margot and Matilda.

I feel Florence might even be top 10

Charlotte, Eleanor, Clara and Delilah will rise.

I agree Emily will fall down (But Emilia will rise). I think maybe Isla will decrease too. Lily will fall.

I’m not good with boy names

Cbeebiesrehab · 17/08/2020 13:10

Yes Florence is extremely popular! Think it might make top 10. Agree Isla might drop too. Wonder if the number ones will change at all or if it will be Oliver and Olivia for another year.

Viennasienna · 17/08/2020 13:33

I feel that Olivia is oversaturated. Could be Amelia at number 1 again. Sophia/Sofia should also increase.

Whatsyourflava · 17/08/2020 13:37

Oh next week? Exciting (I'm such a geek)! How do you know they're due next week @Cbeebiesrehab

Cbeebiesrehab · 17/08/2020 13:50

I saw someone say the 26th! I am too, I love seeing the lists every year😆

🤣snap

Looks like the date varies every year but should definitely be coming soon:

Sorry meant to tag you @Cbeebiesrehab

Whatsyourflava · 17/08/2020 14:40

I suppose ONS have been seriously busy the last few months so we'll see! Fingers crossed 🤞

CaffiSaliMali · 17/08/2020 15:44

I think Roman/Rowan/Ronan will rise further up the charts.

Names ending in O for boys seem increasingly popular - Arlo and Jago. Jago is currently hovering around 500 so it won't get anywhere near the top 100, but I think it will have a big jump. Names like Jude and Jonah also seem to be increasing in popularity.

For girls I think Florence could break the top 10 too. Eliza, Rosa and Mila will rise and I think short vowel-y L names will also rise in popularity - Luna, Lyra, Lila/Lyla, Lara, Lana and Layla.

C names for girls seem to be rising - Cora, Cara and Clara for example.

CaffiSaliMali · 17/08/2020 15:58

I wish Wales and England had separate lists so I could see how popular the Welsh names I like are in Wales, and separately how many are being born in England.

I suspect some of the names I like are reasonably trendy in Wales and I would like to be able to show DH that I'm not plucking obscure names out of thin air Grin

Onestepup · 17/08/2020 17:53

I think there will be lots of boys' names which are place names, surnames or occupations. Carter, Hunter etc. Also one-syllable boys' names like Jack or Max.

For girls I think Imogen, Isla and Emily might be popular. Vowels and the letter L.

Dededa · 17/08/2020 18:22

I thought they did within the different tables, might be mistaken

Sorry, not sure why quote failed before.
aureliacecilia · 17/08/2020 18:44

@CaffiSaliMali You can definitely find the top 100 in England and top 100 in Wales on the ONS site. They're often easier to find on the British Baby Names website.

EasternDailyStress · 17/08/2020 18:52

I think Furlough will feature. Possibly spelled Furlough. Grin

Onestepup · 18/08/2020 00:35

Furlough is an interesting one. Maybe it will have an interesting spelling such as Furr-Lowe.

Whatsyourflava · 18/08/2020 07:59

@Onestepup that's interesting you think imogen and Isla will be popular as both names have been on huge and consistent downward trajectories for years now. Especially Imogen , that's been declining for ten years

We shall see!

Viennasienna · 18/08/2020 08:44

I also like emmeline will rise significantly too

Painsnail · 18/08/2020 09:53

@Onestepup

Furlough is an interesting one. Maybe it will have an interesting spelling such as Furr-Lowe.
The -o names are still trendy so I think everyone will spell it Furlo Grin
pinkpinecone · 18/08/2020 15:52

For boys I think Theo (there are so many where I live)
For girls Ada and Mabel will have moved up I hear both more and more
Agree with the post saying Emilia for some reason people are spelling it that way more regularly now.

pinkpinecone · 18/08/2020 15:54

Also names lune Maeve and Neave/Niamh
and Irish sounding names in general line Orla

SweatyAndyFromWoking · 18/08/2020 16:23

I think Olivia and Oliver will still be number 1. I think Oliver will still be in the top 10 when I become a grandparent having never dropped out of it! Grin.

I think Archie will have gone down.

Isla still seems extremely popular around my way but it has been falling in the past so I'm unsure on that one.

I think Iris, Beatrice, Beatrix, Martha, Margot and Ada have all risen.

Even though they're arguably dated I think Chloe and Jessica are having a resurgence.

Boys names don't tend to change much but I think Rowan, Arlo, Elijah and Ezra have risen a lot.

HarrietM87 · 20/08/2020 20:06

Girls: Nora I think will hit the big time, and Orla will keep rising.
Boys: Ezra, Leo and Theo are still everywhere. Interested to see how Wilfred will fare now!

FizzingWhizzbee123 · 21/08/2020 17:34

I think Ada will have jumped up the charts

And I think Jude will have risen up the boys charts. I agree that names like Reggie, Vinnie etc seem to be on the rise.
