I’m not pregnant, just thinking of baby names with my partner. Girls are our hardest to agree on!

We like statement names, but we aren’t keen on too much frilliness. Witchiness is always a plus for us!

Georgia
Sabrina
Serena
Rosemary
Josephine
Lorelei (too much of a marmite name?)
Genevieve (OTT?)
Elise
Susannah
Violet
Lily (does it age well?)

Comments greatly appreciated!

My favourite is Josephine, but no particular reason other than I like the full name, and I like andy likely shortenings.

I'm not keen on Genevieve - mainly from the spelling pov. I knew one years ago and she was always known as "jenny" but got cross when people who just heard her name would spell it like that. I just prefer names that are easier to spell.

I think Lily has been quite popular over the last few years.

I personally am not keen on Violet - I think any name that is "Vile" when reduced to one syllable is not a name I'd give to someone I love.

I don't really like Lorelei.

HomesUnderTheSpanner · 16/08/2020 23:45

It's funny you don't like frilliness because some of those names sound quite frilly to me!

From your list, Elise is a lovely name. Genevieve is not to my taste but sounds quite witchy!

danascully96 · 16/08/2020 23:48

True — that’s why we’re trying to see if these are too frilly. Some are a bit decadent 🤪

Rowan
Willow
Hecate

ShyTown · 16/08/2020 23:59

See I quite like frilly names and Josephine and Genevive were both on my list! I also really like Elise, Violet and Sabrina.

OneTooManyBathtimes · 17/08/2020 00:05

I only liked 1 name for each. Luckily we had one boy one girl.

However, Sage seems a decent witchy name.

Firebird83 · 17/08/2020 00:58

I like Sabrina, Genevieve, Rosemary and Susannah best.

DramaAlpaca · 17/08/2020 01:11

That's a nice list, apart from Georgia (which I simply cannot stand) and Lorelei (which is just silly). Georgina is so much nicer than Georgia.

I don't think any of them are frilly, even the long names. Frilly to me is, for example, names that end in -issa or -belle, or has more syllables or letters than necessary, for example Isabelle when Isabel will do. I don't see any of them as decadent either, but I'm not really sure what a decadent name is Grin

I really like Josephine, Genevieve and Susannah, even though I generally prefer short names.

I like Lily as well, it's simple and sweet. I know one in her 80s and yes I think it ages well. Elise is also very pretty.

danascully96 · 17/08/2020 02:25

Thanks! I’d consider decadent names gaudy or overly self-important. Arabella is a frilly name I despise, for instance, that is too sugary for my tastes. I think girl names should strike a balance between being light and firm, whatever that actually ends up being.

As for Josephine, I’m reading Little Women rn, so Jo March is a great namesake, as well as a nod to the beloved Josephine Rabbit ☺️. Also, Josephine is my grandma’s name. I just love it’s warmth and sumptuousness!

Genevieve is nice too because of nns like Gigi, Vivi, or Ginny. It has that witchy vibe, but I wonder if it risks being pretentious...

Felicity is another consideration, although the nns aren’t wonderful!

Thanks again 🥰

My partner’s grandma is Elise, which is why there’s suddenly a shorter name. It is lovely, though! And Lily is too cute not to adore 💕

Ah! Thank you!! Sabrina has really caught my interest lately, it’s so bewitching. And Audrey Hepburn is a lovely reference. I am going to ask my partner if he likes Sabrina and Genevieve together — they both have Celtic backgrounds with notable women from history and legend. Not sure if they sound right together? Guess I’ll find out — thanks!

I like Serena, Susannah, Georgia and Josephine.

Natt99 · 17/08/2020 08:48

Love your names! A lot of them are on our list for our DD. Our favourite is Sabrina and we also like Josephine nickname Josie.
I really like Lorelei but my DH isn't keen on the negative connotations.
Elise and Lily are nice but they are the more popular from the list so likely to have more classmates with these names.

RiteAid · 17/08/2020 11:40

Georgia - really pretty
Sabrina - not wild about it but don’t hate it
Serena - pretty
Rosemary - love
Josephine - love! Even though it’s unusual I think it’s so pretty
Lorelei (too much of a marmite name?) - too much of a Gilmore girls connection for me
Genevieve (OTT?) - I like it
Elise - pretty
Susanna - for me, a bit dull
Violet - lovely
Lily (does it age well?) - lovely, think it’s timeless

What about Georgiana?

sunyla · 17/08/2020 12:10

Georgia - It's a very nice name but it is pretty common as I know quite a few of Georgia's, Georgies or Georgian's. I love the nickname Gia.

Sabrina - My favourite by far! Such a beautiful name and not too common either.

Serena - Lovely name and not too common.

Rosemary - Beautiful name.

Josephine - Not a fan, sorry. I can only imagine this name on someone who is 40+ years old. Though I do like the nn Josie.

Lorelei - Not a fan of this name either, just sounds off to me for some reason.

Genevieve - I think it's pretty and not OTT however it will likely get shortened so you'd want to pick a nickname you like.

Elise - Never been a fan of Elise but I think that may just be me.

Susannah - I don't hate it but I can't imagine it on anyone under 40 and I don't like the nn Sue or Susie.

Violet - So many people love this name but it's so similar to Violent so I really don't like it.

Lily - I think Lily is a beautiful name and ages well but it is extremely common. I can't even count the amount of Lily's I know.

In the end, you should pick the name you love and think I'd best for your child because no matter the name there's always going to be some who love it and others who hate it. Smile

Tillygetsit · 17/08/2020 23:11

I have a Susannah so that's my favourite. I think your list is great. Ginny was the name a beloved relative had so I think that's cool.

danascully96 · 18/08/2020 04:27

Top three are Lily, Genevieve, and Rosemary. I think if we had three daughters, that would work beautifully. Thank you all for your great feedback!

Lilith instead of Lily?
Hester
Marceline

My fave 'witchy' name is Hecate.

MikeUniformMike · 18/08/2020 12:45

Georgia - like
Sabrina - prefer Sabina and Sabine (Zabeen-uh)
Serena - nice
Rosemary - not keen.
Josephine - nice
Lorelei - awful
Genevieve - seems frumpy. Jennifer is much nicer
Elise - yet another name starting with El
Susannah - lovely
Violet - ok but don't like Vilet pronunciation or Vi
Lily - don't like Lil. Overused.

CaffiSaliMali · 18/08/2020 20:49

I really like Sabrina. I also like Susannah, Serena and Rosemary. Rosanna is also nice if you like Rosemary and Susannah.

I also give you:
Morwenna
Morven
Morgana
Mara
Marisa
Iseult
Isolde
Lyra
Seraphina

VenusClapTrap · 18/08/2020 22:51

I like Rosemary and Violet the best from your list. Josephine is also nice. Can’t stand Genevieve - far too fussy/frilly for me.

Raven is a good witchy name that got a surprisingly positive reaction on here recently.

DoTheNextRightThing · 18/08/2020 22:52

My favourites are Genevieve and Violet, but I actually like most of them! Not keen on Rosemary, it feels old fashioned. And my family has too many Susannahs 😂 tired of it by now.

HD98 · 19/08/2020 12:37

Georgia - Fine enough to me.
Sabrina - Not keen, personally.
Serena - Nothing wrong with it (I prefer Sierra or Sienna).
Rosemary - I can't picture it on anyone that's not old or a herb but could be a lot worse.
Josephine - Same as above - old to me but it would pass. I feel like both Rosemary and Josephine are quite likely to get nicknames (I think Rosie or Josie are nice enough, but do you?)
Lorelei - Not the worst but just reminds me of shampoo...
Genevieve - OTT, yes. Never liked this name, much too much for me.
Elise - I like it, nice name.
Susannah - Another that doesn't do much for me, but nothing wrong with it.
Violet - Never been a big fan but there are much worse.
Lily - Sweet, I like it. I think it ages fine, but something like Lillian/Lilian would give her the option?

In general I think we have different tastes - I like the sweet and simple names, but none of your names offend me (apart from maybe Genevieve)

BikeTyson · 19/08/2020 12:42

I really like Serena and Elise. I’m not so keen on Josephine but the Little Women connection is good - in the same vein what about Louisa?

Like a pp I like Susannah but not Sue.

Used to like Violet and Lily but think I’ve now met too many!

Also love Felicity.
