Indigo

Mangotango123 · 13/08/2020 15:30

I am in the UK.
We are TTC and quite like the name Indigo for a boy as it will be a rainbow baby (we've had 2 MCs previously).
What are thoughts on this? Google is clear that it is predominately a male name with male definition but I have heard of girls called it and wondered what public view was?
Thank you

I like it, the 2 I know are both girls and usually I am not keen on unisex names but I think this one does work and is fab for a boy. I do know one boy called Indie but not sure if it's short for anything. It really suits him!

Oneandabean · 13/08/2020 17:08

I know several girls with that name but no boys

florascotia2 · 13/08/2020 18:06

Am sorry, but 'google' is wrong. Most baby names sites are rubbish.
Here are the facts for England and Wales, based on official government statistics:
names.darkgreener.com/#indigo

In 2018 - the last year for which England and Wales official figures are available- there were 90 girls named Indigo, and 11 boys.

Inigo is a boy's name.

Flappingflamingo · 13/08/2020 19:31

I'm so sorry for your losses but I really don't like it, for girls or boys

daisypond · 13/08/2020 20:48

I would assume a girl. I’m not keen. Inigo is a male name, as PP said.

TempsPerdu · 13/08/2020 21:30

The only Indigo I’ve ever met (would be around 20 now) is a girl.

SavoyCabbage · 13/08/2020 21:49

I don’t think it’s very fair to a child to enmesh it’s identity With the fact you have previously had miscarriages. It is a nice name thoughI

sn’t an ‘indigo child’ something to do with other-worldliness and general spiritually?

LimeLemonOrange · 13/08/2020 21:51

Beautiful name, I love it

surlycurly · 13/08/2020 21:52

I love the name but for a girl. 'Indigo' children are hyper sensitive/ feeling and are supposed to be very empathic and emotional.

DramaAlpaca · 13/08/2020 21:54

I see it very much as a girls' name.

Yes, I agree with this. It's your baby's name, it should belong to him and him alone.

Just on the name itself, it definitely is more of a girls' name.

RandomTree · 13/08/2020 21:54

I like Indigo and the nickname Indie, I'd think of it as a boy's name.

DoTheMaccaroni · 13/08/2020 21:56

I think it’s gorgeous for a boy 🙂 plus girls end up with boys names all the time so... go for it Grin

Raindrop87 · 13/08/2020 22:24

Weird, I've never thought of it as a boys name, always a girls name!

Mangotango123 · 13/08/2020 23:35

I’ve never thought of it in that way before (associating the child with previous miscarriages).

I know a lot of people who chose names that reflect the notion of a ‘rainbow baby/miracle baby’ as a way of asserting that child’s existence to be a miracle and so longed for after endless struggle.

Indigo for us isn’t really about the meaning, more so it’s uniqueness however we felt it was quite fitting to also be a colour of the rainbow.

These are all ideas at the moment though as we aren’t even pregnant yet :)

Thank you so much everyone xx

I think its a beautiful name! Quirky without being too 'out there'

june2007 · 13/08/2020 23:39

I have known 1 male dog and 1 girl called Indigo.

CommonCarder · 13/08/2020 23:48

I knew a girl called Indigo.

Being honest I would assume a parent who was into New Age stuff but that's because I remember the book from the 1990s so that's possibly an out of date association.

Anordinarymum · 13/08/2020 23:49

Peppa Pig sings about Indigo.

" Oh we love indigoooooo"

It's a rainy sunny day......

sorryforswearing · 13/08/2020 23:52

I think of it as a girls name.

netflixismysidehustle · 14/08/2020 01:39

In the case of boys I think Indy Jones (Indiana Jones) is the association that people will think of.

Wavescrashingonthebeach · 14/08/2020 01:43

Girls name to me.

Reminds me of that Jacqueline Wilson book where the shop is called Indigo.

Whatever you choose im sure it will work for you x

worstwitch18 · 14/08/2020 02:44

I do consider it unisex but I also think of dream catchers and crystals and that sort of thing.

stellarfox · 14/08/2020 04:11

I thought girl when I read it
