Can you predict?

I’ve noticed that some baby names that were considered “common” years ago, now sound elegant to me.

An example is:
Victoria (many Vicky’s and perhaps Vicky Pollard tarnishing it’s elegance). However if I were to see a baby Victoria, I’d now find it regal and classy.

Charlotte: I used to know so many growing up, known as “charlie” and it was nothing special. Now if I were to see a baby Charlotte, I would see it as elegant- perhaps because of princess Charlotte.

I just find it interesting how my interpretation of names can change over time.

A few that I predict are:

Emma
Mary
Sarah
Emily? Just because there’s just so many Amelia’s and Emilia’s that Emily just seems more simple.

Peter
Nicholas
Jonathon
Timothy

Which names do you think will make a comeback again?

@EugeniaGrace I love all the names you mentioned! Though Heather still seems dated to me

@BabloHoney sorry I’d have to agree with your DH there!

@MikeUniformMike

I’ve always adored Katrina as well- which was very popular when I was at school though- but I’ve always loved it.

I don't like Katrina at all, sorry.

Viennasienna · 13/08/2020 20:11

@MikeUniformMike well hurricane Katrina ruined that name for many, so I’m sure you’re not alone in that opinion!

I definitely see Diana making a comeback.
This generation of us who remember her alive and her unfortunate sad short life probably won’t use it because it feels tainted somehow.

But the next generation may think of her as the lost elegant princess and it may have a renewed lease of life. (Kind of like with the name Grace and Grace Kelly).

I predict Diana will be on a rise in future.

Suzy and Suzanne seem very dated. I see Susan, Sue and Susie making a comeback.

Diana is lovely.

123Dancewithme · 13/08/2020 21:28

I definitely think Susie will make a comeback.

CaffiSaliMali · 13/08/2020 21:53

I know a baby Susie. She's just Susie on the BC.

I like both Susie and Susanna. I suppose Susie fits the trend for short vowel heavy names, and the ie ending. Susanna fits the trend for girls names ending in a.

I can see them coming back.

emilybrontescorsett · 14/08/2020 06:37

I don’t see why Paul won’t make a come back. Soon it will be a ‘grandad name’ rather like Wilfred, Archie etc.
Peter always reminds me of Peter Sutcliffe, I can’t not make the connection.
I think the trend for more unusual names will continue.

wintertime6 · 14/08/2020 06:44

Both my children have names on your list 😀

artyone · 14/08/2020 13:42

I think more classic less fussy names will make a comeback.

Alice
Sally
Jane

Lewis
John

Names which can never come back
Karen

Viennasienna · 14/08/2020 18:10

@emilybrontescorsett I think you have a valid point about Paul...never thought it as a hipster “grandad” name.

OP posts:
Viennasienna · 14/08/2020 18:12

@artyone I think Alice is amazing! I definitely agree.

Also agree with sally

Not Karen but I think Karina with the nickname Nina but be a great future choice.

@Viennasienna There was a Nina at my daughters preschool, I don't think it was short for anything, It's nice and classic sounding and quite unique in that age.

Viennasienna · 15/08/2020 07:07

@artyone I’m personally not too much of a fan, but I wouldn’t mind a longer BC name. But I agree it’s unique in this time when most girl names are frilly

mintich · 15/08/2020 07:21

I know a baby Emma and a baby Nicholas so they are perhaps on their way back

Viennasienna · 15/08/2020 13:55

@mintich see those names seem so fresh and classy to me now!

@Change17

daisypond same! I was so surprised. I thought they may have chosen a lesser known royal name like Adelaide. Or chose an older name like Mary. Charlotte wasn’t even on my list of considerations.
Same. I thought they would be brave and go for Mary
LiBan · 15/08/2020 13:58

@123Dancewithme

I definitely think Susie will make a comeback.
I like thst. Billy and Susie. Ladybird book chic
