Any thoughts on the name Klaus for our DS or any similar suggestions. Also any names that can be shortened to Klaus that aren't Niklaus?

Reminds me of the vampire diaries Grinbit of an odd sounding name really (especially for a baby)

thistimelastweek · 07/08/2020 20:08

Karl?

lilianaM · 07/08/2020 20:09

I was thinking it is a little strange for a baby but love it when he gets a little older. That's why I was thinking it to be like a nickname?

Lovely name, not sure how it will be received in the English language... we used it as DS 2nd name, it's my gandads name- born on 6th December! (& have had a lot of raised eyebrows!)
Are Nicolaus or Nikolas any good contenders?

JanewaysBun · 07/08/2020 20:13

Makes me think straight away of a series of unfortunate events

Flynn999 · 07/08/2020 20:17

I would assume the owner of such a name would be German, but it sounds very harsh, especially for a small child/baby.

Feralkidsatthecampsite · 07/08/2020 20:18

Surely potential for Santa jokes?

Ukholidaysaregreat · 07/08/2020 20:20

Klaus is a lovely name. Very German.

FedUpAtHomeTroels · 07/08/2020 20:25

Kurt.

Hairthrowaway · 07/08/2020 20:25

I think the name really suits the eccentric character in The umbrella academy, but don’t think it necessarily translates well as a name for a normal British kid

SugarHour · 07/08/2020 20:25

Makes me think of Santa but it's otherwise ok, though (making a big assumption as to OP's nationality) a bit of an unusual choice for a British child.

Hairthrowaway · 07/08/2020 20:26

Normal should probably say ordinary? Like I think it’s a name you have to live up to

ShowOfHands · 07/08/2020 20:28

I have a wobbly gonk called Klaus. Will your baby have a full beard and a cute button nose too?

SpeedofaSloth · 07/08/2020 20:29

Unfortunately I think of Klaus Barbie.

Brot64 · 07/08/2020 20:41

Klaus is the only short version of Nikolaus unless you go for something like Karl-Klaus, Klaus-Peter etc which is very common where I am from. There is also a possibility of your Klaus being named Klausi, Mausi, Kläuschen, Klößchen as a short form or nickname of Klaus, again depending on where you are. I find Karl better.
