Hi I just wanted peoples thoughts on the name Maya?

Not long found out I’m having another girl, I already have a daughter called Leah and I think Leah and Maya go well together, what are people’s thoughts?

Pronouncing Maya as May-a

Love the name Maya and it just flows perfectly together with your daughter's name Leah.

Lavenderblues · 03/08/2020 21:48

I like Maya and it goes well with Leah.

Chelsbrown · 03/08/2020 21:51

I love it too! Do you think it could get pronounced wrong as my-ah that’s my only concern

I'd pronounce it May-ah.

But if people mispronounce it, they'll learn quickly.

FizzyGreenWater · 03/08/2020 22:45

Practically everyone will pronounce it My-ah.

Bit too samey with Leah, either one!

Chelsbrown · 03/08/2020 23:00

I quite like the ah sounding names, Leah, Maya and I also like Orla however partner doesn’t.

I didn’t think many would pronounce it My-ah tbh because that’s not how it’s spelt

Thanks though

I originally read it Mya.. but when I looked again it’s obvious it should be May-a.
I really like it xx

123Dancewithme · 03/08/2020 23:02

Most people will pronounce it My-a.

Marlena1 · 03/08/2020 23:03

I think it's lovely (love Leah too and they go well together)

123Dancewithme · 03/08/2020 23:03

The May-a pronunciation makes me think of mayonnaise.

xmummy2princesx · 03/08/2020 23:03

I’d pronounce it May-a

purplejungle · 03/08/2020 23:05

I'd pronounce my-a if I didn't know.

Fruitshootloop · 03/08/2020 23:06

I would pronounce it My-ah. I don’t think I’ve really heard of it pronounced May-ah before, and I’m not sure what spelling would fit that. Maia?

Whatsyourflava · 04/08/2020 07:42

Lovely choice

Lavenderblues · 04/08/2020 08:40

I can't think of another way to spell May-a than Maya. I think it's a lovely name.

ILoveStickers · 04/08/2020 08:51

It's lovely, but I know 3 babies called Maya, all pronounced My-a, so that's how I would assume it was said. But it will be easy to correct people!

Oneandabean · 04/08/2020 09:51

All the ones I know are said My-a, also don’t forget famous Maya Angelou also pronounced My-a. I think you would be correcting people a lot. I’ve never heard May-a before, maybe Maia? But I’d still be more inclined to say My-a

baumwolle · 04/08/2020 09:53

I know 4 Mayas, all My-a

IndiaMay · 04/08/2020 11:36

I know a few Maya's pronounced My-a. They're of Polish origin so I'm assuming that's how its spelt in Poland. It may get mispronounced a lot but that shouldn't put you off. Even simple names get mispronounced often

MikeUniformMike · 04/08/2020 21:07

Maya Angelou was a My-ah.

bluemoon2468 · 04/08/2020 21:57

I work in primary schools and I know at least 3 Mayas all pronounced My-a. I would always assume that's how it's pronounced, as I've never heard of the name May-a. If you like it go for it, but be prepared for a lifetime of incorrect pronunciation and correcting people!

DoTheMaccaroni · 04/08/2020 22:00

I’d also pronounce it My-ah. I love it but I really really don’t like it pronounced May-ah at all!

FelicityPike · 04/08/2020 22:05

I know it as My-a too.
