Tova or Eira?

Oneandabean · 29/07/2020 18:25

After searching through every baby book and website we have narrowed it girl names down to either Tova or Eira. We also like Millie but can’t find a full name we like (I don’t like nn as full names).
What do people think of Tova and Eira and any suggestions for Millie that aren’t the obvious Mildred, Millicent etc.

I prefer Eira 😊

DubiousGoals · 29/07/2020 18:27

We use Milly as nn for Emily

AllMyGreggsInOneBasket · 29/07/2020 18:28

Eira, never heard it before but it’s lovely!

Treeofheaven · 29/07/2020 18:37

I like Eira, only known one over 30 years ago.
How about Emilia for Millie?

Callybrid · 29/07/2020 18:39

Millie could be Amelie, Camilla, Amelia, Emilia, Mila

How would you pronounce Eira? Would seem strange to me if it sounds like Eire.

Is Tova an anglicisation of Tove? I’ve not come across it but I like the sound of it.

Oneandabean · 29/07/2020 18:46

My daughter middle name is Amelia, and there are a lot of Emily’s where I live.
I never know how to pronounce Mila, some say me-la others more like mill-a.

Eira is ay(as in day)-ra.

I love moomins and Tove Jansson but everyone seems to pronounce her name differently, my favourite book has a character named Tovah, I prefer the spelling without the H though. It would be easier for people to pronounce Tova.

Eira

bridgetreilly · 29/07/2020 19:21

Tova sounds to me like a car make or model. I don't really like it for a person.

Eira is okay, though not my personal taste, but I would have pronounced it Air-ah if I hadn't read your post.

I also thought Tova should be the name of a car or truck, not a nice name at all. Eira is a Welsh name meaning snow.

Oneandabean · 29/07/2020 19:45

Tova is from both Old Norse and Hebrew origin. I’ve always loved it.

Yes, Me and partner are both welsh and baby due in winter so Eira fitted, and it’s such a pretty name.

Eira is ay(as in day)-ra.

That's not quite right. It's a Welsh name and it means "snow".

It's pronounced more like "eye-ra", not "ay-ra". It's difficult to explain to an English speaker.

Oneandabean · 29/07/2020 19:54

@JaJaDingDong It seems to depend what part of Wales you are from south seem to say eye-ra but north say ay-ra. I am north wales way so everyone I know says it the same as me.

Ay -ra in North Wales as Op says.

Crookshanksthecat · 29/07/2020 20:07

Prefer Eira to Tova but like Eiry even more (pronounced eye-ree)

Cbeebiesrehab · 29/07/2020 20:12

Love Eira. Down south we pronounce it eye-ra (well the little girls I’ve met do) but I love either pronunciation.

tararabumdeay · 29/07/2020 20:12

Eira used to live in our 16th century cottage in North Wales but moved out due to tragic circumstances. She came back, like a fairy god mother, to welcome our new baby.

She was courageous, courteous and gracious.

I've not seen her since and we relocated for work many years ago but I'll never forget her familiar charm. Seeing her so at home, (in a strange place to us having been there just a few months) helped me feel welcome there for seven beautiful short years.

newphoneswhodis · 29/07/2020 20:14

I would pronounce it ear-ah if I hadn't read your post. I much prefer Millie. Less trouble with pronunciation/spelling

Elieza · 29/07/2020 20:15

Unless you like Ireland I’d go with Tova.

Tova Borgnine is the only Tova I have ever heard of.
As in the late Ernst Borgnine‘a wife.

She’s on QVC quite a bit. I think she must have been beautiful back in the day. She’s very well groomed and looks great for her age.

Oneandabean · 29/07/2020 20:24

@Elieza I’m curious as to what you mean by like Ireland? Eira is a welsh name meaning snow.

bridgetreilly · 29/07/2020 20:26

Eire is the Irish word for Ireland.

Username6345789 · 29/07/2020 20:29

Personally I like Tova (or Tovi) DP is from that part of Europe so have heard it before

Oneandabean · 29/07/2020 20:30

They are both said and spelt differently so I don’t see the connection, being welsh I don’t think anyone will confuse it tbh

I know an Amelia that is a Millie in daily life

UnconsideredTrifles · 29/07/2020 21:02

My daughter's name is shortened to Eiri (ay-ree) - we're in South Wales and despite my best efforts almost everybody (especially people who only speak English) call her Eye-ri. It may be safer in North Wales, but just be aware that a lot of people seem to struggle with the sound!

Eira is still beautiful though, and I would go with that. Our girl was almost Gweneira.

dollypops15 · 29/07/2020 21:03

I love Amelia or Matilda could use Millie for short x
