Tova or Eira?

Oneandabean · 29/07/2020 18:25

After searching through every baby book and website we have narrowed it girl names down to either Tova or Eira. We also like Millie but can’t find a full name we like (I don’t like nn as full names).
What do people think of Tova and Eira and any suggestions for Millie that aren’t the obvious Mildred, Millicent etc.

Millie could be Camille, I'm considering that name currently.

Angelmonkey · 29/07/2020 21:10

Tova is nice, not a name I’ve heard before but I like it.
I know a Melissa who goes by Millie

AudaCityLimits · 29/07/2020 21:23

Unconsidered Eiri is such, such a gorgeous name.
I think Eira, as you're Welsh. I like Tova too, but only if you share roots with the name origins. (BTW am north Walian and would say ey-ra.)

LizzieAnt · 29/07/2020 21:33

They are both said and spelt differently so I don’t see the connection.
Actually, Éire is pronounced more or less the same as you say Eira. However, it should really only be used as the name for Ireland when speaking in Irish, not in English, so hopefully it shouldn't cause confusion.

mathanxiety · 29/07/2020 21:47

I love Tova.

mathanxiety · 29/07/2020 21:51

I hear Éire in my head with more of a 'air' sound.

I agree it wouldn't cause any confusion.

(The word eiri otoh, mentioned as a NN, is Irish for 'get up' or 'rise'. But again, absolutely not likely to be a problem. Just a curiosity).

Tillygetsit · 29/07/2020 22:37

I think Tova is really pretty and unusual. Quite a strong sounding name too. Lovely to see something different.

fantasmasgoria1 · 29/07/2020 22:38

Prefer tova!

Luzina · 29/07/2020 22:45

I really like Tovah. Ive met two women called Tovah, both from Israel. Eira is nice too, maybe better as it is Welsh and therefore has more of a connection for you

Dinosaursdontgrowontrees · 29/07/2020 22:53

I really like Eira. It’s beautiful. I’ve never heard it before (I’m in London) I think it’s really lovely.

SirVixofVixHall · 29/07/2020 22:57

Unless you are Welsh nobody will pronounce Eira properly. It isn’t ayra as in dayra .

SirVixofVixHall · 29/07/2020 23:00

Oh I see you are Welsh, I have never heard a Welsh person use the flat ay sound in day for Eira.

Ritascornershop · 29/07/2020 23:01

I haven’t heard of Eira, but it’s pretty. I love Tova and know a few Jewish women and girls with that name.

WorriedMummy2020 · 29/07/2020 23:03

I like both but prefer Eira.
So many names of all origins can potentially be mispronounced. I wouldn't let that bother you when choosing. People who matter will learn how to say them.

KingCatMeowInSpace · 29/07/2020 23:05

To me Tova is a Jewish name for a religious Jewish family and it means 'good' in Hebrew. Eire is the word for Ireland and is pronounced the same as your name so I immediately thought of that. Sorry not keen on either at all

CaffiSaliMali · 30/07/2020 12:20

Eira is high on my list, so that gets my vote. I pronounce it like this -

www.bbc.co.uk/wales/livinginwales/sites/howdoisay/names/index.shtml?e

I know how to say the Welsh sound Ei properly, but ey is the closest approximation I can get written down.

So EY-ra. EY as in hey and ra as in rabbit. In my accent hey and hay are pronounced the same.

It's a beautiful name - short, simple and feminine without being frilly.

MikeUniformMike · 30/07/2020 14:00

Of the two Eira, but it seems very trendy at the moment, probably because names like Evie, Eva, Ava, Erin etc are popular.

I really dislike how Eira is said in a non-welsh speaking accent, Ey-ruh or Eye-Ruh. Sorry.

JacquelineLadyBugg · 30/07/2020 14:12

Eira is lovely! I like that it has meaning for you as well.

Amelia and Eira make a nice pair as well imo.

cafedesreves · 30/07/2020 14:18

Millie could be short for Camilla?

JacquelineLadyBugg · 30/07/2020 14:21

Oh I like Camilla and I LOVE Camille.

TheWomanTheyCallJayne · 30/07/2020 14:24

Eira was on my least for my dd years ago. It’s very pretty but too popular for a more unusual name if that makes any sense.

Tova is lovely. It conjures up moomins for me. Yes, I know she was Tove.

Tavannach · 30/07/2020 14:25

Eira seems the same as Eire to me and as you're Welsh I'd avoid it.

Millie names:

Romilly
Camilla
Melissa
Melinda
Emmalyn

*list

crimsonlake · 30/07/2020 15:07

Not sure if somebody has already mentioned this but Eira means snow in Welsh. Is there not a Tova brand on the qvc shopping channel...reminds me of that.

Oneandabean · 30/07/2020 15:08

Thanks everyone. I don’t like any full names that can be shortened to Millie so I think I’m going to have to write that off.

I don’t know of any Eiras around where I live so I don’t think it’s that common.

Tova in old Norse is feminine of Thor. It means beautiful thunder.
