Girls names similar to Morven

My OH is quite uncooperative when it comes to names, he tends to find a reason to dismiss anything I suggest! The one girl's name he really likes is Morven, which we only know of because a close friend recently used it for their new daughter. We can't really use the same name, so are looking for names with a similar feel. So far we've got Seren and Arwen (I grew up in Wales so it wouldn't be too weird to use Welsh names). Any other suggestions? They don't have to end -en, just names with a similar feel.

It's been mentioned already but Muireann is beautiful

@Swearwolf ooh I knew an Arianwen once, I'd forgotten that name. Good call!

Nerine?

Merren/Meron/Maren?

Scottish rather than Welsh but a similar feel.

ButterflyRuns · 28/07/2020 19:35

I don't have any suggestions but I love Seren!

@MacavityTheDentistsCat, it is Bronwen, -wyn indicates a boy, but Bronwyn is a misspelling of Bronwen.

Loice - is that a name? I've seen Loyce. Lois is pronounced Loyce in welsh.

Arwen is from Lord of the Rings.

Myfi is weird because it's a formal word for me/myself/I. Might be ok short for Myfanwy, which is a granny name.

Nimuë is unpronounceable in Welsh. I can't think of the welsh version.

Arianwen is awful, sorry.

Morwen is the obvious one - pron. MORR-wen.

Morfydd is nice, hardly used and is pronounced MORR-við

Myfanwy is a similar sound (although I don't like the name myself). Arwen is from LOTR, not wales. Love Anwen though.

Arianwen is awful, sorry.
My opinion is based on it looks made up - many of the -wen names are, and the pronunciation issues.

Arian is silver, money or cash. Pronounced ARR-yan. Adding -wen shifts the stress to the middle syllable - it's always the penultimate syllable that gets stressed, so the pronunciation is Ar-YANN-wen.

Online how to pronounce sites list is Aryan-wen (awful), Airy-Anwen (awful) or Arry-Anwen (just wrong).

As I said it is Ar-YANN-wen. Not awful but, like many welsh names, it will get mispronounced.

@MikeUniformMike all names are made up. Language evolves to reflect culture and progress.

What's the answer to people potentially mispronouncing Welsh names or any names? Stop using them?

BrokenBrit · 29/07/2020 08:11

Merryn

Did you mean Arwen or Anwen in your original post? Arwen has a strong Lord of the Rings connection but is very pretty.

What do you think of Cerys or Rhiannon?

Levatrice · 29/07/2020 13:11

Murron? I had never heard of this until I saw a baby girl called it. Scottish I think

Arwen isn’t technically a ‘Welsh name’. It comes from Lord of the Rings. However as a teacher in a Welsh first language school, I’ve taught enough of them to realise that plenty of Welsh parents have adopted it and used it as a name. Which is totally ok in my opinion- it does indeed work in the Welsh language, is clearly made up of Welsh phonemes, and is no different to many English names that have been made up somewhere along the way! In fact as a Welsh person, I’d consider using it myself.

Morwen or Morwenna are the two that spring to my mind when I hear Morven.

I don’t think Welsh names should not be used just because some English people struggle to pronounce them. It would be a great shame to see them all die out.

CeriBerry · 30/07/2020 10:11

Aneira is another one that came to my head.
