Amity

I have a real soft spot for virtue-type names but I feel like this treads a nice line between the really popular normalised ones (Felicity, Verity, Constance, Faith etc) and full-on Puritan (Relief, Comfort, Experience...)

It's not that out-there is it?

full-on Puritan (Relief, Comfort, Experience

Anyone who calls their child any of these names needs shooting. God, the relentless bullying those children would experience!

northernbelle84 · 28/07/2020 20:27

Aw I used to work with a Comfort, she was lovely. Her sister Beauty was also lovely but not very beautiful. Always the risk with virtue names.

I'm quite taken with Experience! (But back on topic - not keen on Amity)

Jaws, it's not a name for a child.

Fettuccinecarbonara · 28/07/2020 22:02

I’ve never heard of this name. But I’d pronounce it like a cockney homity pie.

Tempusfudgeit · 28/07/2020 23:10

Der der. Der der. Dun dun dun dun dun dun dun dun dun dun dun dun dun dun dun dun der-ler-ler! Sorry!

Myneighboursnorlax · 28/07/2020 23:11

Another vote for Amityville horror, sorry!

ButterflyRuns · 28/07/2020 23:13

Must admit I thought of Amityville Horror too

AHF1975 · 29/07/2020 09:39

Jaws for me. But I'm old

Puffalicious · 29/07/2020 09:42

Sorry, I think it's ridiculous.

JaneJeffer · 29/07/2020 10:14

Yes Jaws.

What about Charity? Or is that too Dingle?

WendyHoused · 29/07/2020 10:19

In Canada it’s was also a charity. You take your old clothes to the Amity bin by the supermarket.

So, old clothes bin, Jaws island, horror house.
That’s a Nope from me.

Hippofrog · 29/07/2020 10:20

Sounds like an insurance policy

MollyAtTheFolly · 29/07/2020 10:23

I taught a lovely Amity. I didn't once think of Jaws or Amityville Horror. My first thought was that it was my first Amity I've ever taught (gets to be a rarity the longer you're in teaching!), my second was the Latin origin.

RustyLeesBogBrush · 29/07/2020 10:28

Jaws for me too but I am in my 40s.

The thing is OP, you can have a kid with a beautiful name and people still joke. My daughter’s friend Faith says she gets people singing George Michael’s Faith to her all the time.

IWantToBeNynaeve · 29/07/2020 10:29

I think its a lovely name but yeah unfortunately the first thing I think of is the horror film.
