Is it to comic book?

Odin?

I'm looking for a four letter name that's masculine and not too common. DD's name is Iris, which is the goddess of rainbows in Greek, thought Odin might be nice to go with. But worried people will automatically think it's too comic bookish. I did like Otis but a close friend just named her dog that.

Thanks

I don't particularly like the name, but I wouldn't associate it with a comic book at all so I wouldn't let that stop you using it.

FairNotFair · 26/07/2020 08:18

Unfortunately I'd associate it more with the far right movement (Soldiers of Odin)!

OrangeGinLemonFanta · 26/07/2020 08:21

I've never heard of the far right group.

The name has been in mythology for a very long time before Odin appeared in comics, and he's only got a small part in the Marvel films. Its not to my taste really but I wouldn't let the comics put you off.

I can say this confidently because I'm wearing Marvel pjs Smile

Loki?

daisypond · 26/07/2020 08:33

Odin is way too much. You want to call your child after a god of war and death?

Mybobowler · 26/07/2020 08:35

If you like Otis, go with that! Your child is definitely going to outlast your friend's dog. Otherwise, what about Idris?

Mybobowler · 26/07/2020 08:40

Oh hang on, if your daughter is Iris, Idris will be a big no-no 😅

I wouldn't think of comic books and I love Marvel. Loki is more well known so people are more likely to associate that with comics. What about Ezra?

ButterflyOfFreedom · 26/07/2020 08:45

Not a massive fan of Odin but wouldn't have made the comic book connection.

Otis is cool!

Odin isn't really a deity I would want to be associated with my child.

And it’s not great to be saddled with Loki either.

allfalldown47 · 26/07/2020 09:08

It's the sort of name your child would be asked to repeat, every single time they introduced themselves, for the rest of their life!
It's a no from me, sorry.

ClashCityRocker · 26/07/2020 09:12

Odin hasn't got marvellous associations really...great name for a dog though.

I wouldn't hugely associate with the comic books, but given the number of comic book adaptations coming out in recent times I'd worry that it would be the next summer blockbuster.

Ori (pronounced Or Ree) X

parrotonmyshoulder · 26/07/2020 09:43

5 letters, but I taught a boy called Orson. All the other little boys thought he was called Awesome, which was quite...awesome, and suited him well.

emilybrontescorsett · 26/07/2020 09:49

Odin it reminds me of Swanlake for some reason. Sounds like an evil name to me sorry.

Whatsyourflava · 26/07/2020 09:52

I'd stick with Otis. I can't see it mattering about the dog? Why would that be a problem.
If not how about Otto
Odin is not good, sorry

daisypond · 26/07/2020 09:53

@emilybrontescorsett

Odin it reminds me of Swanlake for some reason. Sounds like an evil name to me sorry.
That’s because of Odile, the sorcerer’s baddy daughter.
yesyesdear · 26/07/2020 09:55

How about Cole? Greek origin = Victory

VirginiaWolverine · 26/07/2020 10:42

I wouldn't worry about calling a baby Otis because of the dog, and it's a great name, but I don't think it goes well with Iris. Too many "is" endings when trying to shout message to one of them when outside on a windy day.

Marcipex · 26/07/2020 11:33

Go with Otis, it’s much nicer than Odin.
It doesn’t matter about the dog, your DS will probably like sharing a name.
Many, many dogs are called Luna, Daisy, Noah, Max etc. It’s fine.

Painsnail · 26/07/2020 11:44

Orin?

Spied · 26/07/2020 11:47

I like Odin. Hate Otis.

Sunsage · 28/07/2020 19:44

I think Odin is lovely, I have a relative with this name!
