Leah

We are just trying to shorten our list of names a bit. I really like Leah but am worried that everyone will hear Mia. Not that we dislike Mia but it wouldn't be her name!

My Mum actually did hear Mia when I said Leah but that was over the phone and she is deaf so possibly not the person to judge from (she also can't hear the difference between 2 and 3 when spoken which has never made sense to us)!

I love the name Leah and it's quite underused on my opinion. Personally I wouldn't connect it with Mia.

Owleyes16 · 25/07/2020 14:35

That's my name. I've never had Mia, but I do regularly get: Lee, Leia, Leigh, Lee-Ann, etc. and I've had Thea in the past, as well as some other random ones. I feel like it's the easiest name ever to spell and pronounce but so few people get it right it's ridiculous!

The Lee and and Leia pronunciations infuriate me the most, because the people who use those refuse to hear any different and won't change the way they say it. They think that's how you pronounce it, and that I'M wrong!

IamMaz · 25/07/2020 14:39

I like it!

MikeUniformMike · 25/07/2020 14:41

It's ok but a bit nothingy. It will disappear amongst all the Lily, Lyra, Luna, Lola..... names

OLGADEEPOLGA · 25/07/2020 14:45

I've never heard of a baby Leah, it sounds lovely.

Mrsjayy · 25/07/2020 14:49

Leah is lovely and honestly it doesn't sound like Mia or even close. I know of a few Leah's youngest is primary age.

Emmagen · 25/07/2020 14:50

I've been tying to think of an accent where Leah would sound the same as Leia. But I can't! They sound similar not the same. I have a name that has different correct pronunciations and that's annoying enough let alone people thinking I'm getting my own name wrong!

I do really like it. And although I'm not looking for a matching name I think it goes well with my son's name who also has a traditional biblical name. But his name is one where everyone knows how to say it, everyone knows how to spell it and it's almost impossible to mishear.

Emmagen · 25/07/2020 14:50

Oops name change fail.

Poppydaisys · 25/07/2020 15:08

I like Leah. And say Leh-ah ( Lay-ah)

Mia is pronounced Mee-ah.

june2007 · 25/07/2020 15:18

A good trusted name not too fashinable but still enough for it not be old fashioned or odd. Yes it has a similar sound to mia but I have never confused the two.

Spidey66 · 25/07/2020 15:19

I think it's a lovely name.

CovidBovine · 25/07/2020 15:23

Really like it. I have a French friend called Lea which is how they spell it which I also really like.

Emmagen · 25/07/2020 15:27

I'd be pronouncing it Lee-ah I've never heard anyone say it Lay-ah before!

FlorenceFlounce · 25/07/2020 15:29

I went to school with some Leah’s (I’m 35) but don’t really know any younger ones and I would say that’s a good thing 👌

A classic biblical name but not overused so it’s a great choice x

FlorenceFlounce · 25/07/2020 15:30

Also it’s “Lee-ah” and I’d never confuse it with any other name

Emmagen · 25/07/2020 15:30

Whilst double checking the pronunciation with those YouTube videos after someone said the say it differently I have discovered that my 3yr old who doesn't speak clearly can say it easily... that's another pro for us!

Mrsjayy · 25/07/2020 15:30

Yes Lee ah Leia like the princess is the other name isn't it ?

NellieandRufus · 25/07/2020 15:30

It’s a lovely name

Roselilly36 · 25/07/2020 15:32

I love the name Leah, I have only ever known one Leah, I have always liked the name.

IHeartSusanDey · 25/07/2020 15:54

Beautiful name. If I had ever had another daughter, would choose it.

TokenGinger · 25/07/2020 16:00

I love the name Leah. It's my best friend's name and she's never been confused as Mia or anything else.

achickencalledberyl · 25/07/2020 16:05

I know of a Leah who is actually pronounced Lee (female)

I love Leah pronounced correctly 😊

Emelene · 25/07/2020 16:06

I think it's okay, but in the Bible story Leah was the unwanted sister and bride (he wanted her sister Rachel) so I always think of that!

Justgivemesomepeace · 25/07/2020 16:13

Im biased because I have a Leah. She has never been called Mia or anything else to my knowledge. She really likes her name which Im pleased about. There seems to be the odd one in all generations.

icecreamclouds · 25/07/2020 16:17

I'm a Leah and find it's rarely mispronounced. I always automatically spell it for people as there's not many around so I feel lots of people just spell how they hear it so Lea/Lia.
I have had Leia (Lay-ah) a couple of times, and Leigh the latter of which 2 people have always continued to call me, one is my physio so I don't seem him enough to to be that bothered but the other is the person who owns my gym despite the fact there is also an instructor called Leigh, I think he just thinks they are the same name.
