Baby girl number 4 - is this name a bit ‘out there.’

We’re really struggling on names for baby girl number 4! As you can probably imagine 🤣

I was talking to OH last night about my great grandmother’s maiden name and how I’d always wanted to use it as a middle name but how we’d always used deceased grandmothers/great grandmother’s names instead.

He wants to use this name as a first name as he hasn’t heard anything else that he likes as much, similarly I’m starting to think the same. It wouldn’t also be a lovely link to my lovely grandad whose name we haven’t been able to use as tribute as we’ve not had any boys!

The name is Bonham, we don’t pronounce the ‘H’ though so it’s pronounced ‘Bon-am.’

Can also be shortened to Bonnie.

I love it but wasn’t sure whether it was a bit out there?

I’m not fond of surnamey first names. Bonnie is pretty and although I usually prefer a full name on the BC I would probably use Bonnie on its own in this case. Bonham comes from ‘bon homme’, and ‘good man’ is a bit of an odd name for a girl.

Bonham’s is a famous auction house but I suppose people also call their girls Christie.

IHeartKingThistle · 25/07/2020 10:57

It's not that it's out there, it's just that it's not very nice. And it's not really a name. I do love Bonnie though.

user1488481370 · 25/07/2020 11:20

@ZoyaTheDestroyer, yes I was under the impression that it was more of a boys name. However I think it’s suits either really.

I must admit, i do prefer a ‘full name’ as opposed to abbreviations. We just really like it 🤷🏼‍♀️

@IHeartKingThistle well I suppose thats each to their own. Definitely is a name BTW.

Aww I think it cute and love the nickname Bonnie ❤️ X

ZoyaTheDestroyer · 25/07/2020 11:33

I didn’t mean that it is a boys’ name, but that it’s a surname with a masculine meaning. It would be like calling her Goodman.

Does it ‘go’ with her sisters’ names?

OLGADEEPOLGA · 25/07/2020 11:34

It's a beautiful name

Keyperfect · 25/07/2020 11:38

Bonnie is lovely.

I wouldn't choose Bonham. It's an old Irish word for a piglet www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/bonham

howlat · 25/07/2020 11:39

@ZoyaTheDestroyer

I didn’t mean that it is a boys’ name, but that it’s a surname with a masculine meaning. It would be like calling her Goodman.

Does it ‘go’ with her sisters’ names?

Agree.

I would think that you had run out of ideas. Especially if your other DDs had commonly recognised as first names first names. And as she grows up, she might notice the same. I would have if it was mine name.

Bonnie is nice though. Also very unusual nowadays!

IdblowJonSnow · 25/07/2020 11:52

Not keen on the sound of it. Like the idea of using names that mean something- just not that one.
Also not keen on bonnie.

Poppyismyfavourite · 25/07/2020 11:58

Bonnie could be short for other names - how about one of those?
Briony
Ebony
Elizabeth
Bronwen
Yvonne

ByGrabtharsHammerWhatASavings · 25/07/2020 12:00

It's OK but I suspect most people will assume it's a nod to the Bonham-Carters. Bonnie is nice though.

Thisismytimetoshine · 25/07/2020 12:03

It's not particularly nice, no. I don't see the relevance of struggling to find a name because it's your fourth, either. There are more than four names in the world.

DelphiniumBlue · 25/07/2020 12:04

Sorry, I think it's not a first name for a girl or a boy. But then I think Addison, Maddison etc are awful too.
Bonnie is nice though, short for Bonita IME.
But what I think is neither here nor there, name your baby as you see fit.

MerryMarigold · 25/07/2020 12:04

Have a friend called Bonnie and I love it. Bonham is....ok I guess. I just think of Helena Bonham Carter so definitely associate it as a surname.

It's say it's more of it goes with the others. I always find it odd when there are families who obviously ran out of their favourite names like Lily, Daisy, Flora and Mackenzie or Elizabeth, Anne, Mary and Jezebel.

BellaVida · 25/07/2020 12:07

Doesn’t Bohnam literally mean ‘good man’? I wouldn’t use it as first name, but Bonnie is lovely as it is.

The only other names I can think of which can be shortened to Bonnie are Bonita and Bonelle.

DulciUke · 25/07/2020 12:26

I'd think of John Bonham (showing my age) and would assume it's a boy's name. Really like Bonnie though.

CoatTails · 25/07/2020 12:30

I like it.

Whatsyourflava · 25/07/2020 12:41

Bonham isn't good.

Bonnie is nice though!

daisypond · 25/07/2020 12:45

I don’t like it. It’s a surname. I’m not keen on Bonnie either.

Namechangex10000 · 25/07/2020 12:46

I like it and prefer it to Bonnie! I wanted to call my kids after my nans middle name (her mums maiden name) which was kinloch, I’m not sure any of them would have thanked me for it!!!

maddiemookins16mum · 25/07/2020 12:57

You, and she, will spend decades (her whole life) correcting, explaining and spelling that name.
Just call her Bonnie or use it as a middle name.
Don’t saddle the wain with such a name.

Haworthia · 25/07/2020 12:59

I’ve really not a fan of giving girls surnames as names. They always sound so masculine.

AudTheDeepMinded · 25/07/2020 13:01

Why don't you put it as a middle name on the BC and use Bonnie as an evryday use nickname? That way kid has a more conventional formal name but you get to call her Bonnie, IYSWIM?

AudTheDeepMinded · 25/07/2020 13:02

@Haworthia great minds think alike.

Micawbs · 25/07/2020 13:03

I like it too.
I don’t usually like surname type names, but it doesn’t have the same feel as those to me. 🤔
For me it would depend on how it goes with her sister’s names. I wouldn’t let the idea it means ‘man’ bother me either. In Old English ‘man’ was gender neutral and meant ‘person’.
