Baby girl number 4 - is this name a bit ‘out there.’

We’re really struggling on names for baby girl number 4! As you can probably imagine 🤣

I was talking to OH last night about my great grandmother’s maiden name and how I’d always wanted to use it as a middle name but how we’d always used deceased grandmothers/great grandmother’s names instead.

He wants to use this name as a first name as he hasn’t heard anything else that he likes as much, similarly I’m starting to think the same. It wouldn’t also be a lovely link to my lovely grandad whose name we haven’t been able to use as tribute as we’ve not had any boys!

The name is Bonham, we don’t pronounce the ‘H’ though so it’s pronounced ‘Bon-am.’

Can also be shortened to Bonnie.

I love it but wasn’t sure whether it was a bit out there?

It's a name alright, a surname, not a particularly attractive one and with a very masculine meaning too.

Just call her Bonnie, it's not to my taste but it's better than Bonham. Like a pp the sound reminds me of the Irish word for piglet.

I know an Irish woman called Bonnie, it's used as a diminutive of Bláithnaid, pronounced (sort of) BLON-ed.

SmudgeButt · 25/07/2020 13:14

I think Bonham is lovely. And not masculine sounding.

To me Bonnie is too diminutive, a pink and fluffy name. Then again I've never had a nickname so maybe that's influencing my opinion.

2bazookas · 25/07/2020 13:27

Bonham, known as Bonnie, sounds lovely

sweetnosugar · 25/07/2020 13:28

Could you just use Bonnie as a full name?
Bonnie is lovely!

bridgetreilly · 25/07/2020 13:51

I think it's a good middle name, terrible first name.

WhoWouldHaveThoughtThat · 25/07/2020 13:55

Why not just 'Number4'?
Can be shortened to Numpty.

TimeWastingButFun · 25/07/2020 13:56

Yes it means 'good man' so definitely not for a girl! Not to mention the millions of questions through her life over which is the surname...

emilybrontescorsett · 25/07/2020 16:32

Do her sisters have similar names?
I think it would appear very strange if her sisters are called something like : Annabel, Clarissa, Georgina and then you get Bonham.
I don't like Bonnie though. Imagine if she isn't very pretty?

123Dancewithme · 25/07/2020 17:24

I’d either use it as a middle name, or just go with Bonnie as the first name. I know one short for Bonnita.

NameChange84 · 25/07/2020 17:29

I actually love it and I’m a fussy bugger!

Lollypop4 · 25/07/2020 17:35

Sorry, I dont like it.
Your DD will always have to corrcect the pronounciation too

Iwantmyoldmnusernameback · 25/07/2020 17:54

I really like it

Esthermoo01 · 25/07/2020 17:58

I knew a man called Bonham, I think it's a lovely and unique name for a girl. I would've thought she'd end up being called Bonnie by most as if people aren't familiar/keen with a name they often just use a more familiar one! If you love it you should go for it. It doesn't really matter what other people's opinions or connotations of it are as long as it's isn't something rude that's going to haunt your child. We have a little girl called Noa and I'm sure people would've had a fair bit to say about it if we'd asked before she was born bit we didn't and it suits her perfectly x

user1488481370 · 25/07/2020 18:02

Arrgghhh I still really like it as a first name, however I’m getting the overall consensus is to use it as a middle name .....

I’ve looked up the various meanings of the name, not feminine at all but the actual pronunciation give me the feeling it’s quite a soft name. It goes with our other DD’s names and we have a fairly simple surname that luckily anything goes with.

We’ve looked at thousands of girl’s names, at best, we’re a bit ‘either way’ on the ones we do like. We’re both incredibly fussy.

Once she starts school I'd think the nickname would be hammy.. and that makes me think of a pig. But I always say if you love a name then use it.

user1488481370 · 25/07/2020 18:04

@Esthermoo01 what a lovely message, thank you!
Again, Noa is quite a soft sounding name. Have never thought about it for a girl before you said but it’s gorgeous!

I can understand you wanting to include Bonham as one of her middle names.

Bit out there for a first name and personally I really dislike Bonnie...it's horribly twee imo.

Thisismytimetoshine · 25/07/2020 18:10

We’re both incredibly fussy.
1). Most people are, you know, when it comes to choosing a name for their child...
2). Most people do not choose Bonham. Particularly for a girl 🤷🏻‍♀️

user1488481370 · 25/07/2020 18:31

@MintyCedric I’m not massively keen on Bonnie either to be honest ....

@Thisismytimetoshine ok, no need to be so bitchy about it though is there?

OP posts:
user1493494961 · 25/07/2020 19:26

I would think that poor Bonham had definitely drawn the short straw.

user1488481370 · 25/07/2020 19:30

@user1493494961 funny you’d think that when taking into consideration the fact that you don’t know my other children’s names?

Honestly folks, I don’t mind people saying they don’t like the name or it’s not their cup of tea, or too surnamey etc, all absolutely fair and valid points which of course I’m mulling over myself ....
However, the bitchiness and nastiness is uncalled for. That’s a family name that still means a lot to me regardless of whether you think my child may be called Bonnie for short and may not be pretty or what most people do or do not call their children.

strawberry2017 · 25/07/2020 19:34

It's a horrible option for a first name. The sentiment is lovely but defiantly not first name material

lemyn · 25/07/2020 19:37

I don't love it but it's not bad either. Bonnie is nice.

lemyn · 25/07/2020 19:38

What about Bonita?

villamariavintrapp · 25/07/2020 19:39

Sorry, I don't like it. I'd have be mortified as a teenager being called 'bone-ham', and even now though I can appreciate the sentiment for you, I still wouldn't like to be called it. Bonnie is ok. Or middle name slot best.
