Is this posh?

I’m trying to convince my partner to name the baby Amelie. But he thinks it’s too “posh”. Is it even? He says he’ll feel idiotic shouting out her name because he’s proud of his “working class” roots.

I have no idea what he’s talking about? Does he have a point? Are the “Amelie’s” that you know all posh?

I really want to use it!

Isn't it one of the most popular names at the moment? I'd consider it mainstream, not posh.

Ughmaybenot · 22/07/2020 17:31

No, it’s not posh, not to my mind anyway. It’s pretty tho.

TheLightSideOfTheMoon · 22/07/2020 17:32

No. Not at all.

toobusytothink · 22/07/2020 17:35

Not posh at all. Very regular IMO ...

Alonelonelyloner · 22/07/2020 17:44

No decidedly not. Maybe 30 years ago when French names weren't de rigeur. Not now.

LightUpLetters · 22/07/2020 17:45

I know quite a few

NoMoreFlowers · 22/07/2020 17:47

It's a bit posh

CatteStreet · 22/07/2020 17:49

Not at all. Pretty standard IMO.

CatteStreet · 22/07/2020 17:50

Out of interest, what does he suggest as an alternative, that (in his view) passes the 'working class' test?

Spied · 22/07/2020 17:50

Too mainstream to be posh.

SavannahMayfield · 22/07/2020 17:51

I don't think it's posh but can be a little depending on pronunciation and and spelling. I knew 4 amelie's when I was at school (which was private) but they were spelt Améli - supposably french though I thought it was meant to be ie and none of them had and french relation🙄. It's a very pretty name though!!

CakeRattleandRoll · 22/07/2020 17:54

Not posh. Lovely name though.

Cam2020 · 22/07/2020 17:54

Not really. Lovely name though.

Intrigued what your DH's ideas are...

KetoIFWinnie · 22/07/2020 17:55

Agree, too mainstream to be posh

I prefer Emily.

NameChange84 · 22/07/2020 17:58

Quite the opposite of “posh” in our local demographic!

“Posh” here would be Arabella, Jemima, Frances, Catherine, Beatrice, Lucinda, Luisa, Margaret, Mary etc.

Thisismytimetoshine · 22/07/2020 17:58

Not remotely.

RuthW · 22/07/2020 17:59

Definitely not posh

newreality1 · 22/07/2020 18:00

Not posh. A very lovely name though.

Silkyredpjs · 22/07/2020 18:01

Thanks everyone. I really love the name, he says just call her Emily. He says he’ll pronounce Amelie as Emily as well...which makes me cringe

Goodoldfashionedploverboy · 22/07/2020 18:04

Well, it's French. Is he one of those people who consider anything "furrin" to be "posh"?

Silkyredpjs · 22/07/2020 18:04

@NameChange84

Could I ask where about you live please? Thanks

bridgetreilly · 22/07/2020 18:05

Pretentious, rather than posh, I'd say. Call her Amelia or Emily.

GetOffTheTableMabel · 22/07/2020 18:05

You really can’t insist on calling your child by a name that your partner dislikes. Your dd will be his child too. You have no more right to decide on a name than he does.
Amelie is really not posh though.

NameChange84 · 22/07/2020 18:06

Greater Manchester.

We have some upper middle class recent Emilys by the way!

Amelie is quite common here along with Ava-Rose, Evie-Mai, Darcie, Ruby etc.

Kaiserin · 22/07/2020 18:09

OP, I do wonder if what your DH really means is... He doesn't like foreign sounding names?
