Is this posh?

I’m trying to convince my partner to name the baby Amelie. But he thinks it’s too “posh”. Is it even? He says he’ll feel idiotic shouting out her name because he’s proud of his “working class” roots.

I have no idea what he’s talking about? Does he have a point? Are the “Amelie’s” that you know all posh?

I really want to use it!

Absolutely not posh. It’s the complete opposite. Downmarket these days.
Emily is posher.

NameChange84 · 22/07/2020 18:10

Amelie unfortunately also sounds horrendous in a Mancunian accent so that might add to the fact it’s not seen as a “well to do” child’s name here. Down South it might be better thought of.

Do you like Sylvie? That’s a bit less common but similar vibe?

@bridgetreilly

Pretentious, rather than posh, I'd say. Call her Amelia or Emily.
Exactly what I was thinking!
Silkyredpjs · 22/07/2020 18:14

His point is that he sees it like Mrs Bucket trying to pronounce her name “Bouquet” to sound “posher”.

I know I can’t force him, I just love it so much.

Emily is nice but it’s just not Amelie...

Tell him he’s being ridiculous. I’ve never met a non working class Amelie!

FelicityPike · 22/07/2020 18:29

It’s a very “common” name here too (not one I would use....sorry).

Cosmos45 · 22/07/2020 18:32

Gorgeous name. But, if your partner struggles with it and feels foolish pronouncing it then it will be forever an assault to your ears. My friend for some reason just cant get her teeth round "Josh" and always sounds so uncomfortable saying it. To me it reminds me of calling a child Nicola and someone pronouncing it Nikkla - if it doesn't come out sounding as it should its a bit cringy and then a perfectly nice name comes over as "trying too hard".

TempsPerdu · 22/07/2020 18:33

Definitely not posh - it’s one of those names that came from nowhere, was vaguely hipster trendy for a bit and is now super mainstream and middle of the road. Elodie is following a similar trajectory!

daisypond · 22/07/2020 18:34

Well, in a way he’s right. But he is 20 years out of date. Amelie is now so overused, any pretence it once had to quirky foreign exotic pretentiousness has long gone. It’s a common as muck name now.
Both Emily or Emilia are better. Or Amelia.

BobFleming · 22/07/2020 18:37

He's being ridiculous. What does he want to call her?

Amelie is a lovely name, but so popular. My worry is that she'd be in a class of more with the same name.

Roselilly36 · 22/07/2020 18:38

I love it, gorgeous name.

maddiemookins16mum · 22/07/2020 18:39

It’s not posh as such (but few people will spell it correctly though).

BobFleming · 22/07/2020 18:39

My sons, (18 and 21) seem to have friends who are all called Emily, Amelie, Emilia, Amelia, Emmy and Emma.

Whatelsecanipossiblydo · 22/07/2020 18:41

Harsh comments on the name Grin
It’s a pretty name and I actually only know 1 other. I teach and have for a long time and haven’t come across any in school either.
I teach in a very working class area...I live in a slightly better area...
However, if your dh is really uncomfortable with it you may need to move on.
There are so many beautiful names out there. What about Madeline or Matilda? Emilia is nice too? Gabrielle?

PocketBears · 22/07/2020 18:41

You think it's posh just because it's French?

Anyway, it's a nice enough name.

FindingNeeeeemo · 22/07/2020 18:47

It would just make me think you were influenced by the film/were trying to puck something unusual (without realising it's actually pretty popular nowadays).

FindingNeeeeemo · 22/07/2020 18:47

Pick not puck!

LikeSilentRaindrops · 22/07/2020 18:49

I’d have to agree with @NameChange84 - in lots of accents, the lovely inflection is lost, so instead of Am-e-LEE, it becomes AM-a-li. That then sounds a lot like a mispronounced Emily! Beautiful name, but I don’t think it translates that well into British accents.

allaglow · 22/07/2020 18:54

It's a Boden dress.

MikeUniformMike · 22/07/2020 18:55

It's on a downward trend. It became popular in the UK after the film came out in 2001.
I don't like it and don't think it is posh. It's not awful, but Emily is much nicer.

Kaiserin · 22/07/2020 18:56

Hah! Doesn't want your child to get ideas above her station, eh? Lovely.
A name is just a name, but his attitude would worry me.

LynetteScavo · 22/07/2020 18:57

There are lots of Amelies around here, so not posh.

I'm going to watch the film again now.

Fairenuff · 22/07/2020 18:59

Why does he have to 'shout out' any name? He won't be calling a dog.

If he doesn't like the name then you have to move on and choose another.

LividLaughLovely · 22/07/2020 18:59

@Cosmos45 how on earth does she mangle “Josh”???

MikeUniformMike · 22/07/2020 19:00

What names does he like? Maybe he's like you to ask on here for some names that are not in the least bit aspirational.
