Is this posh?

I’m trying to convince my partner to name the baby Amelie. But he thinks it’s too “posh”. Is it even? He says he’ll feel idiotic shouting out her name because he’s proud of his “working class” roots.

I have no idea what he’s talking about? Does he have a point? Are the “Amelie’s” that you know all posh?

I really want to use it!

To me it's something you'd name your child if you wanted to look posh.

mrsmuddlepies · 22/07/2020 19:04

if he doesn't like it, it seems really wrong to force it. Choose a name you both like.

mrsmuddlepies · 22/07/2020 19:05

It is French as well, so unless you are French, it does seem a bit pretentious.

AmelieTaylor · 22/07/2020 19:07

I couldn't possibly comment.

mrsmuddlepies · 22/07/2020 19:08

Perhaps he doesn't mean posh but pretentious?

LynetteScavo · 22/07/2020 19:08

Chloe is also French, 30 years ago might have been considered "posh" or "pretentious".

ReturnofSaturn · 22/07/2020 19:11

I know a couple of little Amelie's. Definitely not a posh name round here - in Blackpool!

AuntieStella · 22/07/2020 19:20

I don't think it's posh

But if your DH doesn't like it, whether his reasons are good or bad, it's back to the drawing board

TinyMetalBirds · 22/07/2020 19:23

I think Emily is more posh than Amelie. Both are pretty names. I know two Amelies and neither are remotely posh.

InFiveMins · 22/07/2020 19:35

He's being ridiculous. Amelie is fine and not posh, it's just a nice name, just like Emily is a nice name.

GinWithASplashOfTonic · 22/07/2020 20:04

Things which are a slight twist on a very popular name is not posh

pinkpinecone · 22/07/2020 20:20

It's a nice man's and not posh just French. Any names that become fairly popular loose their poshness. I used to think Arabella and India were posh names and I don't anymore as they've become so common.

All the Amelies I know are working class families. Not that it’s a working class name especially. It’s just that I only really mix with working class families and it’s not unusual in my circles.
It may well be equally popular among posher families too, for all I know.

Thesearmsofmine · 22/07/2020 20:54

It’s a pretty name but very common now and there are so many similar sounding pretty names like Amelia which are popular at the moment and they kind of blend into one.

It also sounds awful in our local accent.

123Dancewithme · 22/07/2020 23:36

It’s the opposite of posh.

backseatcookers · 22/07/2020 23:41

@GetOffTheTableMabel

You really can’t insist on calling your child by a name that your partner dislikes. Your dd will be his child too. You have no more right to decide on a name than he does. Amelie is really not posh though.
This. If he doesn't like it he doesn't like it, it doesn't really matter why does it?
FlaskMaster · 22/07/2020 23:51

It's not posh, it's popular across the spectrum I think. I do prefer Emily tbh, but if there's just nothing you both like I think the one who grew it for 9 months and pushed it out should get casting vote!

AwkwardMoment2020 · 22/07/2020 23:55

Amelie is the sort of name that a lot of the little girls in the “rougher” part of my hometown would be called to be honest.

It’s a bit like the Hayley, Jayde or Chantelle type names from when I was at school. It’s definitely not posh.

AnotherBiteMe · 23/07/2020 00:22

My children are all 18 + but I do not know nor have I heard of anyone called Amelie (London). I really like it.

notangelinajolie · 23/07/2020 00:36

Not posh at all. In fact it's top 10 so pretty common.

Silkyredpjs · 23/07/2020 07:44

Thanks everyone. Oh I’m Surprised people are saying it’s a “chantelle” type name! I don’t want that either. Though are people confused with Amelia? Because Amelie is definitely not top 10...but Amelia is and where I live almost every girl is Amelia. Never met an Amelie though.

I love names like: Liliana, Rosabella, Gabriella

I know loads of little girls with that name

I friend had it for a middle name for her little girl years ago

It's definitely not posh 😂😂😂

islandislandisland · 23/07/2020 07:48

I wouldn't say posh. A friend just called her LG Amelie, I thought what a nice unique name it was. But then I don't know many children! I do know another Amelie who is about 13 though.

AwkwardMoment2020 · 23/07/2020 07:50

No, I definitely meant Amelie not Amelia, sorry. Like some PPs I’m originally from the North of the UK and it’s a very common name and has been since the mid 00s.
