My husband and I would like to choose a Welsh middle name (he's Welsh!), and we've decided on Evelyn as the first name. Any suggestions of good combinations? They all sound a bit clunky when I try and put them together!

Nia. Evelyn Nia sounds great to me!

FreezerBird · 21/07/2020 14:25

Haf, or Fflur. I'd go for one syllable I think.

Tesni or Nia. My favourite Welsh name is Eleri but Evelyn Eleri might be too much.

Since it's a middle name you could go with Cariad.

Mair. Evelyn Mair. ( pr. Ma-eer)

ArseyWelshNameBore · 21/07/2020 18:55

I don't think many will go but as it's a middle name it won't get used much.
Marged or Mai perhaps.

Lowri doesn't have an e on the end.

Evelyn Efa only if you would think it ok to use Evelyn Eve.

ArseyWelshNameBore · 21/07/2020 19:23

If you use a welsh middle name make sure you can say it and spell it properly.

Some of the suggestions are misspelt or aren't welsh, which sort of defeats the object.

Mair is one syllable. Like Myra without the a.

smodssmeds · 21/07/2020 19:25

Evelyn Ffion

Maincat · 21/07/2020 19:44

Thanks for the suggestions everyone. I feel like the middle name needs to be quite short as Evelyn had three syllables.

How is Ffion pronounced? Fi-on? And is Nia nee-ah, or Ny-ah or something else entirely?!

Could just wait and ask my OH when get gets home I suppose 😂

Ffion is FEE-onn
Nia is NEE-a - the a is like a in cat
Mair is My with a rr on the end - Mai is easier but not as nice
Haf is Haav
Mererid is Mer-ERR-id
Enid is ENN-id
...

A bit dated as a middle name, but still nice. Wyn.
Usually a boy's name but used as a unisex middle name. It was very popular in the 1960s.

Gwen is sometimes used as a middle name.Means the same as Wyn (white, blessed), but is the feminine version of Gwyn, from which you get Wyn.

Evelyn Gwen Surname sounds pretty.
As does Evelyn Fflur.

Haf and Mai are quite meh as middle names. Pretty enough but used a lot.

Siân was so popular in the 1960s, and many girls were Siân Something, where Something was the name used day-by-day, so it strikes me as a bit odd as a middle name, but I love the name.

Maybe your name has a welsh version that you could use as a mn.

Non and Manon are nice but could be tricky if your surname is a noun (Hill, Foot etc).

Nest is beautiful but I'm not sure if it travels well. It's from the same as Agnes, but Annes, Annest and Anest are versions too. Annest would work best.

I like Mallt (Maud).

If you are looking at online lists, bear in mind that there are some crazy suggestions on there. You can get away with a boy's name as a middle name, something like Hedd would be ok.

The names suggested on here will tend to be middle-aged names or very recently trendy.
