I love the name Lawrie as a nickname for a boy, but I’m not a fan of Lawrence for the full name. I thought of Lorian which I love but what are your thoughts, a bit too unusual or even pretentious? I’m also a big fan of Finnian and Cassian/Caspian — hence where I got Lorian from.

Are your children’s vaccines up to date?
17caterpillars1mouse · 17/07/2020 18:55

I like it.

I also like Florian (not for Lawrie obviously but seems like it would suit your style)

I also know a Lawrie who has it as his fullname, though I think it's spelt differently, but can't remember. He's mid 30s and a friend of a friend

AllTheWhoresOfMalta · 17/07/2020 18:56

Couldn’t you just go Laurie? It worked in Little Women.

MikeUniformMike · 17/07/2020 18:57

Awful.
I like Caspian.

CasuallyMasculine · 17/07/2020 18:57

So are you saying you’d choose Lorian as a name because you prefer it to Lawrence, but you wouldn’t call your child either - you’d call him Lawrie?

Seems a bit unnecessarily convoluted to me. Everyone will think it’s short for Lawrence anyway. Just name him Lawrie - nicknames seem to be accepted these days.

IggyAce · 17/07/2020 18:57

I like it, I’ve not heard it before but doesn’t sound too out there to me.

Starbonnet123 · 17/07/2020 18:59

Love the name Laurie / lawrie

FelicityPike · 17/07/2020 19:04

Just use Laurie/ Lawrie

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 17/07/2020 19:05

Laurie was an abbreviation of his surname in Little Women his name was Theodore Lawrence and he was also often called Teddy.

I like Lorian its nice it's quite Lord Of The Rings.

Sexnotgender · 17/07/2020 19:07

Lorian is horrible. Laurie is fine as a stand alone name in my opinion.

EssentialHummus · 17/07/2020 19:16

I'd use Laurie (with this spelling).

florascotia2 · 17/07/2020 19:21

Lorien is a bit LOTR.

What about Laurent, the French for Laurence.

SacreBleeurgh · 17/07/2020 19:24

Laurie is a totally legit name on its own IMO, please spell it that way though!! Lawrie looks clumsy I think.

waterjungle · 17/07/2020 19:38

My youngest was nearly Caspian - was going to be Cass for short. I do still like it.

MaiaRay · 17/07/2020 19:45

@SacreBleeurgh ah yes i totally agree about the spelling! i’ll keep that in mind, i think i spelled it ‘Lawrie’ in the original post because of Lawrence, but Laurie is a lot nicer.

Mn is normally all 'give them a full name on their bc'. You want to do that and you're being told the opposite! I think Laurie is nice as it is but I also quite like Lorian. The important thing is your opinion but both are acceptable imo

WaxOnFeckOff · 17/07/2020 20:49

It's quite normal to use a surname as a first name in Scotland and Laurie is a normal surname so therefore works well as a stand alone first name without being short for Lawrence.

BlankTimes · 17/07/2020 20:59

Laurian is a nice spelling too.

Any fans of BakeOff the Profs will recognise it from team patisserie Cocorico www.radiotimes.com/news/2020-05-19/bake-off-the-professionals-2020-contestants-teams/

Grandmi · 17/07/2020 21:53

I have a 20 year old christened Laurence but we have always called him Laurie , He really loves his name and refers to himself as Laurie .

123Dancewithme · 17/07/2020 22:10

Just use Laurie, it’s lovely.

DramaAlpaca · 17/07/2020 22:29

Another vote for just using Laurie, that spelling. No need for a longer version.

SidesteppinTheRona · 17/07/2020 22:46

Lorian is not nice.

Laurie is lovely. Sounds friendly.

Poppydaisies · 18/07/2020 07:22

Lawrence is a great name.

Laurence is a female name, the feminine version of Laurent. Laurie looks very feminine to me.

I like Florian or how about Fabian?

SweatyAndyFromWoking · 18/07/2020 08:44

I was at school with a female Lorien.

I'd just use Lawrie.

emilybrontescorsett · 18/07/2020 09:03

I like Laurie so would stick to that.

MikeUniformMike · 18/07/2020 13:18

@Poppydaisies, Laurence is a boy's name in the UK.
