Hi all,

We have a baby girl due in a few weeks, and have a list of about 10 names we are open to. The one that stands out to me is 'Lana' and in my head when I think about the baby I call her Lana!

So I've been pretty set on Lana but since then I've read about what it spells backwards... now I can't stop thinking that!

What are people's thoughts on the name Lana? Do you think the backwards spelling would cause problems for her later in life or am I completely over thinking it?

Would never have thought about spelling it backwards. People can find jokes in anything if they look hard enough so I don’t think you should worry about that.

Lana Kane from Archer is badass!!

I am pro Lana ☺️

Mmsnet101 · 11/07/2020 19:13

Love Lana. Not a fan of it backwards Wink but it didn't cross my mind until you pointed it out.

I have a friend with the same name and she was never called anything else in school etc.

RenegadeMrs · 11/07/2020 19:16

Love the name. She might get some teasing in secondary school, because kids are kids, but doubt anyone else would notice.

If it bothers you why not try Alana / Alanna / Alanah with a nn of Lana to get rid of the issue?

Elouera · 11/07/2020 19:18

Never considered it backwards! How do you pronounce it? Like Alana without the A?

Not a fan, as reminds me of Lantana which is a poisonous weed where I grew up. Obviously, not everyone would have that association.

SnowdropFox · 11/07/2020 19:37

Really like it but I just can't get the backwards spelling out of my head. I do like Lara too though if that's an option.

Darkbendis · 11/07/2020 20:11

How about Lena? Or yes, Lara?

Nellie3 · 11/07/2020 20:19

Yes Lena and Lara are nice options too :)

Haha I hadn't thought of the backwards spelling thing until I read it somewhere, kind of wish I hadn't!

It would be pronounced Lar-na (but I'm not a fan of spelling it as Larna)

Nice, but not a full name, if that bothers you.

MikeUniformMike · 11/07/2020 20:28

It's fine but means wool in Spanish (I think)

I wouldn't use it simply because there are so many similar names popular at the monent, Luna, Lila, Lara, Lyra, Lily ...

TippledPink · 11/07/2020 20:30

My DD is called Lana- she is 13. I still love her name as much as when I named her and she hasn't had any trouble so far with anyone regarding calling her name spelt backwards. And it is a full name. My friend named her DD Alana though (after my DD was born!) if you prefer a longer name.

Tsubasa1 · 11/07/2020 20:33

Lana is such a beautiful name!

Agar58 · 11/07/2020 20:38

Llama?

Agar58 · 11/07/2020 20:38

Llana

Sorry hahaha typo before!!!!

Breadandroses1 · 11/07/2020 20:54

It's a lovely name with lots of different origins- in Greek it's a derivative of Helen, in Arabic it means something like 'tender'. I know a 6yo Lana and have never thought of it backwards...

mylittleavalon · 11/07/2020 21:01

Would never think of it backwards just think of Lana Del Rey. I think it's a nice name Smile

Bananalanacake · 11/07/2020 21:27

DP and I are Star Trek fans. He always loved the name B'e'lanna and wanted to call his dd that. We realised the registrar wouldn't let us get away with apostrophes so we normalised our dd's name to Lana. Now she's 6 it really suits her, unusual and beautiful.Smile

user1493494961 · 11/07/2020 21:33

Every other little girl seems to have a Luna, Lyra, Lola type name, they all blend into one after a while.

Pinkyyy · 11/07/2020 21:36

I absolutely love the name Lana. I don't know its origins but it just sounds so classically beautiful to me and I'd have never even thought of it spelling anal backwards!

Onestepup · 11/07/2020 21:46

It's a nice name and the backwards name never occurred to me.

Wheresthebiffer2 · 11/07/2020 22:01

It's like Anna, with an extra L at the front. I like it.

TooBusyBeingYoursToFall · 11/07/2020 22:03

I know one, she's 15 now. Her friends at school have picked up on what it spells backwards but I think they just light-heartedly joke about it, rather than tease her for it, and it doesn't bother her. It's a lovely name.

Bubbletrouble43 · 11/07/2020 22:07

Close friend has an almost 16 Yr old Lana. It's a great name, love it. Works for any age and is cool without being pretentious.

Tillygetsit · 11/07/2020 23:27

My sil has a Lanah for that reason.

Whatsyourflava · 12/07/2020 10:58

Lana is lovely. One of my favourite names
I personally wouldn't be worried about the spelling backwards thing

GarlicMcAtackney · 12/07/2020 11:21

‘Larna’ sounds dreadful. Pronounced it as it’s spelled- Lana. But the anal thing would put me off, it’s what I first think of when I see or hear the name.
