Jos, Ellis or Kit?

We're expecting a little boy in September and looking for a short, simple, known name, that's still fairly unusual. His middle name will be Bernard or Harry, which are family names. Our surname is 1 syllable and starts with a 'W'.

Thoughts on which you like best, any pitfalls to be aware of or brilliant other suggestions, much appreciated please!

Of those, Ellis. It is more established as a name in its own right.

How about Jed?

emmathedilemma · 09/07/2020 13:04

Ellis
I can't even pronounce Jos, is it like Joz? It feels like it's missing the h to be Josh for me.

kenandbarbie · 09/07/2020 13:06

I like kit best. But I would use Christopher on bc to give him more choices of name to use.

cameocat · 09/07/2020 13:06

Jos for me is short for Jocelyn. Nice but I would want the full name and then shortened.

I think that about Kit too, as in short for Christopher.

I don't dislike Ellis but it isn't to my personal taste.

Congratulations!

LadyCatStark · 09/07/2020 13:08

Kit. I’d think of Jos as a girls’ name.

Disfordarkchocolate · 09/07/2020 13:10

Kit. My favourite boys name and I couldn't use it.

steppemum · 09/07/2020 13:11

Jos sounds like an abbreviation of Jocelyn. I haven't heard it in any other context.

Ellis and Kit are both good.

RedRec · 09/07/2020 13:11

Ellis. The others are too try-hard.

NannyR · 09/07/2020 13:11

I really like Jos but the spelling doesn't look right, I prefer Joss.

Neednewwellies · 09/07/2020 13:12

Jos I think of as being short for Josephine or Joscelyn so a girls name.
I like Kit but I’d use it as a shortening for Christopher.
Ellis is ok.

ZoyaTheDestroyer · 09/07/2020 13:13

I’d spell it Joss.

I quite like Ellis, or Elliot?

Love Jed.

Tavannach · 09/07/2020 13:14

Kit. I think I'd probably put Christopher on the birth certificate.

babycakes1010 · 09/07/2020 13:16

Ellis! Love it...wanted my youngest ds to be called that but dh wasn't keen so that is his middle name. Went with Frankie instead

Neednewwellies · 09/07/2020 13:16

Yes, Jed or Eli are both similar and cool. Jos/Joss I’d def think it was a girl. Kit really is lovely but I couldn’t just use it without using Christopher.

Gin4thewin · 09/07/2020 13:17

Ellis was in the running for DD had she been a DS! I liked Eli but oh didn't

Neednewwellies · 09/07/2020 13:18

But don’t listen to me because I like Fran for a boy but was put off by everyone saying it sounded too much like a girl! Grin

Moopoohootoo · 09/07/2020 13:18

Kit then if he ever has a sister you can call her Kat

ZoyaTheDestroyer · 09/07/2020 13:18

Oh yes, I like Eli.

bellinisurge · 09/07/2020 13:20

I know a female Kit so it's always been a female name for me.

Tinamou · 09/07/2020 13:21

Kit

sidsgranny · 09/07/2020 13:23

Love Kit!

Jos Buttler (England cricketer) is actually a Joseph so can be used for boys too.

Poppyfields21 · 09/07/2020 13:26

I like Joss rather than Jos, but Kit my favourite overall. Really not a fan of Ellis at all.

YogiMatte · 09/07/2020 13:29

When I was expecting i wanted Joss for a boy, but was slightly put off by Joss Stone (being that she's a girl though not may well not be her birth name).
Anyway still think Joss is a fab name and Joss Stone is less famous now.

Ellis i feel is a surname plus have known a girl called Ellis.

MikeUniformMike · 09/07/2020 13:32

Of the 3, Joe. Ellis would make a nice middle name. Kit just makes me think of the Rooneys.

Oriflamme · 09/07/2020 13:33

I would say Jos is short for Joseph, Kit short for Christopher and Ellis stands alone. I’m a big fan of giving the "full" name and then using the short version, so that when the child grows up he/she has the choice of keeping the short or using the full name (or a different short!). They all sound good with Bernard, Joseph/Jos and Christopher/Kit sound ok with Harry (I think you said? forgotten already 🤦‍♀️)
