Hey,

We're looking at a few names that we like and just wondering how you guys would pronounce them? Where would the emphasis be?

Altea
Raffaele (Raff for short)
Dario
Niccolò (Nico for short)
Chiara
Fabrizio

Also considering but less concerned about pronunciation of:
Rosa
Silvia
Matteo
Lorenzo (Lore for short)
Fabio
and
Paolo

Also if anyone has any bad connotations with any of the names, please shout! 😁

Love all your name choices! Fabrizio is a beautiful name but as PP said, it does make me think of Febreeze when said out loud (at least how I pronounce it - which may be wrong Grin)

LoveSunshine01 · 29/06/2020 16:23

😂😂😂
'Fabreeze'

That association never crossed my mind! Thank god for mumsnet! Fabrizio is OUT!!

Thanks for taking the time to reply @Ickabog @KitMarlowesCodpieceOfThigh and @brieandcrackers it's been super helpful!

@Ickabog and @brieandcrackers are way out with those pronunciations!

@KitMarlowesCodpieceOfThigh is much closer, though I’d say -a, not -uh at the end of those ones.

Fabrizio doesn’t sound anything like Fabreeze.

LochJessMonster · 29/06/2020 16:31

Altea - alt-e-ah
Raffaele (Raff for short) - raff-i-elle
Dario- da-rio
Niccolò (Nico for short) nick-oh-low
Chiara chi-air-rah
Fabrizio fab-ritz-e-oh

Rosa -rose—ah
Silvia sill-vee-ah
Matteo Matt-ay-oh
Lorenzo (Lore for short) lore-enzo
Fabio fab-e-oh
and
Paolo powl-low

elQuintoConyo · 29/06/2020 16:33

Altea al-tay-a
Raffaele (Raff for short) raf-a-e-le
Dario be da-ree-o
Niccolò (Nico for short) nic-o-lo
Chiara key-a-ra (girls' name)
Fabrizio fab-ritz-ee-o

Also considering but less concerned about pronunciation of:
Rosa rose-a
Silvia sil-vee-a
Matteo mat-ay-o
Lorenzo (Lore for short) lo-ren-zo (just as it's spelled!)
Fabio fab-ee-o
and
Paolo pow-lo, pow like a cartoon pow/bang/zoom type thing Grin

All very Italian and lovely.
Others I know are:
Milena
Francesco
Giancarlo - also Carlo
Gianluigi - also Luigi
Gianluca - also Luca
Egle (female, although it might be Sicilian...?)
Felice fel-ee-che, love this name, our friend with this name is great!

Destroyedpeople · 29/06/2020 16:34

.....love Italian names...

ZoyaTheDestroyer · 29/06/2020 16:35

I have Italian family so I know how to pronounce them all but you are right to canvass opinions - it's unusual to find schools which teach Italian and general understanding of pronunciation isn't great.

Assuming you are living in the UK, Chiara will routinely be pronounced with a 'ch' sound rather than 'k'.
People will miss the final syllable of Raffaelle and pronounce it as Raphael.
Niccolò will get 'nick' instead of 'neek'

Destroyedpeople · 29/06/2020 16:35

From your list I like Chiara and Paola

Destroyedpeople · 29/06/2020 16:37

...I know a boy called Nico here in UK and people say 'nee-ko' no problem. ...

daisypond · 29/06/2020 16:39

In Italian,
ch makes a k sound.
z is more like - ts - like you would say pizza.
e is more like -eh.
end letters are pronounced - so the -e on the end of some of those names is a syllable in its own right - a bit like -eh.

CorianderLord · 29/06/2020 16:52

Same as Ikabog except I'd say Al-Tay-ah

Heh1991 · 29/06/2020 17:19

Altea - Al-tee-a
Raffaele- Raff-eye-el
Dario - Da-ree-o
Niccolò- nick- o-low
Chiara - k-ear-a
Fabrizio - fab-reesch-io

LoveSunshine01 · 29/06/2020 17:24

Thanks guys - yeah my DH is italian, thus the Italian theme! It's so hard to know about how they'll get pronounced here as I've forgotten how I would have said things before I met him 😬

So far I think from this I'd say that Fabrizio, Chiara and Altea are all out...

@zoyathedestroyer I hadn't thought of the 'Nick-o'... that's giving me second thoughts too!

For some reason losing the 'eh' sound on the end of Raffaele doesn't bother me too much and I quite like the 'POW-lo' superhero connotation!

@elquintoconyo ooh I haven't heard some of those suggestions! Love Milena and Felice, but I think Felice would end up as Fel-eece here!!

So glad I did this! All opinions welcome!
