Irish boys names

Hi,
We’re a mixed Irish/English couple living in England. Would like to use an Irish name, any suggestions? Surname is one syllable beginning with ‘K’. Thanks!

We are in the same boat and opted for Seamus nn Shay but considered lots of others. We ruled out names which started with a hard C (like Connor or Cormac) because of our surname. It kind of depends on your view of names which English people might not easily pronounce eg Tadhg.

My imaginary child is called Daithi, I absolutely love this name.

We like Tadhg but not sure it goes with our surname (does the g run into ‘K’ surname?).

Like Cillian but not sure about the alliteration.

Like Rory but a friend has used it so I’m not sure about using it.

Love Finn but a very close friend has used this.

Nothing standing out at the moment, find boys names much trickier than girls!

@climbingcorfecastle I also love this but thought it might be too tricky in England!

We have an Aidan. Or you could spell it Aodhan.

I like Ardal, Aidan, Dara and Colm.

Finn is a bit widely used - though that doesn't matter if you love it.

Aodhan is pronounced ‘Aay- awn’.

We have had lots of lovely reactions to Cillian and I'm so glad we went with it now (he's only a baby still)
I think alliteration can be lovely and sound quite strong.
We also considered Liam, Caolan and Ronan. Ronan means little seal which I thought was cute.
We decided against Tadhg as the pronunciation would be so tricky here but I do love the name.

I love Oisín. The Welsh version, Osian, is on my list.

Ronan, Aodhan, Tadgh, Seán and Eoin are also nice.

Ronan, Rowan and Roman are all quite popular names at the moment, so this may make the name less, or more, attractive to you.

My favourite is Dónal. Not too difficult, and good with a K last name, I think.

I forgot Seamus! That was a top contender. We really loved it but got put off by a couple of reactions when we suggested it. I often think my firstborn would have made a fabulous Seamus. I think the nickname Shay makes it very useable in the UK as it gives options. Seami is cute too.

I live in a Gaeltacht area and Aodhan is definitely not pronounced Aay-awn, I've never heard it pronounced that way, always Aay-dawn

@Alwaysundecided mine is often called Seamie at home (or Shay Shay by his best friend)!

Ps I agree with PP who said a double C/I can sound really strong and we chose Cara for my youngest (hello there to anyone I've just outed myself to!), but I couldn't find any C boys names that worked without surname.

There are so many names I love- Diarmuid, Turlough, Padraig, Aodhan (def ay-dawn for me too) but English husband wanted a name that most people n England wouldn't struggle to spell. We did get a few "see-mus?" responses or sometimes get "his name is Jay?" "No, Shay, short for Seamus" but most people are fine with it. If you're both OK with having to spell his name for people, I'd go for a really Irish sounding name because I think they're beautiful.
