I love Aurelia but worry will people not be able to pronounce it properly. And what would a natural nickname be? I’m not keen on ray!

I love this name, although it does remind me of Love Actually 😁

I’d say Ellie for a nickname

TeapotCollection · 10/06/2020 07:47

Forgot to say I wouldn’t worry about pronunciation I honestly don’t think it’s too bad at all, and you could say that about lots of names

LotusClover · 10/06/2020 11:21

I've seen this name popping up frequently on here for months, and I still haven't got the faintest idea how to pronounce it. Is it "aw-REE-le-ah"? "aw-RAY-le-ah"? I wouldn't know which syllables to stress either.

I will admit it looks lovely written down. But I'd definitely expect pronunciation to be an issue.

Wingingthis · 10/06/2020 11:22

Ah-ray-Lee-ah is the pronunciation we like. I believe there is two different pronunciations

I like it, but I must admit that my tongue falls over itself every time I say it out loud.
A nickname could be Lia.

Edenember · 10/06/2020 12:15

@Wingingthis think there’s a few different pronunciations. Oww-reelia to awe-rellia to awe-reelia to awe-raylia. I would default to awe-rellia until corrected. People are easily corrected but i feel like if that’s going to be a chore over and over it’s definitely something to consider when choosing this name x

DelurkingAJ · 10/06/2020 12:17

The Aurelia I know is awe-ray-liya and doesn’t seem to have a nickname.

longtompot · 10/06/2020 12:22

My friends daughter is named this and I think it's lovely.

Puppilangstrumpfi · 10/06/2020 12:53

I know one pronounced Au reh lia.

So the middle syllable is neither ray or tee.

Whatsyourflava · 10/06/2020 12:58

One of my very favourite names. I love it. Pronunciation won't be too much of a problem these days as the name is more mainstream now (still unusual but much more familiar)

IndieRo · 10/06/2020 13:10

There's a cosmetic surgery clinic in Ireland called Aurelia so that's all I think if when I hear the name, sorry.

LouLouLoo · 10/06/2020 13:15

Beautiful name. I’d pronounce Awe ray lia.

MikeUniformMike · 11/06/2020 13:14

Not keen. I'd say it Aue-eel-ia.
Too similar to Aurora, Amelia etc.

daisypond · 11/06/2020 15:41

I’d pronounce it to rhyme with Amelia and Ophelia. Unless you have maybe Spanish roots. I’m not keen on it, though.

Grufallosfriends · 11/06/2020 18:27

I say Au reh lee ah. I like it.

bridgetreilly · 11/06/2020 18:31

I really wouldn't worry about the nickname. Most nicknames come naturally as the child grows up, it's really only on MN that people think they have to be decided in advance for some reason. Aurelia's a nice name to pronounce and have fun with and there will be plenty of time for her to work out what she likes to be called.
