Hello, I'd love some feedback on our shortlist, and some ideas of similar names we may not have thought of. We'd like something not too popular, but also a 'known' name. We're struggling a bit with boy's names - the ones we like are a bit more popular than I'd prefer.

Girls
Anna nn Annie
Emma - possibly too popular, but I think it's lovely
Lara
Naomi
Felicity nn Flick
Celia
Josephine nn Jo
Renee

Boys
Samuel nn Sam
Charles nn Charlie
Alexander nn Alex
Elliott
Montgomery nn Monty
Finn
Arthur

Thank you Smile

I really like Felicity and Renee from your girls list, and Finn from your boys list. You could also consider Jemima (nn Jem) for a girl and Hugo for a boy? x

captainraymondholt · 09/06/2020 10:19

Anna nn Annie - I like this. The most common girl's name in my dd's year though (she's a 6th former)
Emma - I don't know any small Emmas. I like it.
Lara - I like this but prefer Clara
Naomi - it's ok, I'm not a big fan of biblical names
Felicity nn Flick - love Felicity, not keen on Flick, prefer Fliss
Celia - not keen though really love Cecilia, Celia seems dated to me
Josephine nn Jo - love Josephine
Renee - not keen at all, seems really old lady-ish. Also I always want to pn it the French way which I like and I hate the English pronunciation

Boys
Samuel nn Sam - ok, I know so many I do find it boring
Charles nn Charlie - nice enough, prefer Charles to Charlie
Alexander nn Alex - lovely, this is the commonest boys' name in dd's year but again might be less common now
Elliott - don't like
Montgomery nn Monty - nice
Finn - love this but Finlay is very popular, I prefer Flynn as a stand alone
Arthur - like this

I think I would go for Finn, Monty or Arthur but I would prefer Flynn to all of them.
Felicity or Emma would be my girl picks but I would pick Cecilia (or Cecily) ahead of them...

bridgetreilly · 09/06/2020 10:23

I like all your girl choices except Renee and all your boy choices except Finn. My top choices would be Felicity and Alexander.

zscaler · 09/06/2020 10:31

I really like all of your girl names except Renee, and I hate the nickname flick. Celia and Josephine are my favourites.

Boys list is lovely, like them all, favourite is Alexander.

merryhouse · 09/06/2020 11:01

Monty is a bit prissy.

Samuel is quite popular nowadays, as is Charlie. What about Simon? or Joseph?

I don't like Renee. I don't know how you're pronouncing it but I don't like any of them (unless it's ree-ny in which case the spelling is All Wrong).

Love Felicity but not keen on Flick and have never seen the point of giving a name you don't intend to use.

Agree with pp that Cecily is nice.

Melissa, Adelaide, Angela, Lydia, Priscilla
Christopher, Jonas, Mark

You’ve got very similar taste/criteria to me. We have an Annie (though she’s just Annie).

From your list I especially like Celia and Josephine (Josie is also a nice nn) and Arthur (though it’s v popular now), Finn and Monty

Our contenders for DC2, which you might like, have included...

Ellen/Eleanor
Julia/Juliet
Erica
Polly
Lucy
Tess
Imogen
Violet

Alistair
Peter
Matthew
Ewan/Evan
Owen
Miles
Austin
Angus

LotusClover · 09/06/2020 11:38

From your girls list I love Anna and Emma. I quite like Felicity too but the nickname Flick is horrible - Fliss is much softer and nicer.

I like Samuel and Charles from your boys list. The rest are okay apart from Montgomery which I think is very pretentious.

OnABeachSomewhere · 09/06/2020 13:35

Anna nn Annie - lovely
Emma - no, not too popular
Lara - OK
Naomi - lovely
Felicity nn Flick - like Felicity, dislike Flick
Celia - quite like
Josephine nn Jo - OK
Renee - not keen

Samuel nn Sam - OK
Charles nn Charlie - OK
Alexander nn Alex - great
Elliott - OK
Montgomery nn Monty - a bit wet IMO
Finn - don't like
Arthur - stuffy

sarahb083 · 09/06/2020 18:27

Thanks all!

Fliss is much nicer than Flick, thanks for the suggestion. And we'll probably rule out Monty. Any other suggestions welcome!

Anna nn Annie - just call her Annie
Emma - probably the only one in the class.
Lara - nice
Naomi - don't like
Felicity nn Flick - don't like either of them. Flick is horrible.
Celia - nice
Josephine nn Jo - nice
Renee - not sure. I know one who is really nice but I still think Reenie.

Boys
Samuel nn Sam - Yes
Charles nn Charlie - Yes
Alexander nn Alex - Yes
Elliott - not my taste, seems a bit wet
Montgomery nn Monty - Montague?
Finn - nice but a bad boy name
Arthur - ok

manicinsomniac · 10/06/2020 01:55

Girls
Anna nn Annie - I like Anna but not Annie
Emma - it's ok. I find it a bit boring but I don't know why really.
Lara - love it.
Naomi - love it.
Felicity nn Flick - love Felicity but not Flick. I wouldn't shorten officially but once knew a Fizzy short for Felicity which I think is cute for a child
Celia - don't like this at all. Dated and dislike the 'seal' sound
Josephine nn Jo - quite like it. Bit retro.
Renee - don't like it. Dated again.

Boys
Samuel nn Sam - ok but seems like nearly everyone has a Sam
Charles nn Charlie - those that don't have a Sam have a Charlie? But again, quite nice.
Alexander nn Alex - I love Alexander. There are a lot of Alexs around too though.
Elliott - love it
Montgomery nn Monty - very posh but I love it
Finn - really like it. Would use Finley
Arthur - not keen. I know it's very trendy but still seems a bit old man to me.

I would choose Lara and Elliot
Second choices Naomi and Monty

Love Anna and Josephine, very classy. For a boy I really like Samuel.

How about Benjamin?

17caterpillars1mouse · 10/06/2020 11:36

Girls
Anna nn Annie - lovely name, simple, classic. Love Annie

Emma - I only know one 6 year old Emma and her ve never come across it in baby or toddler groups of dds preschool. It's lovely, again simple and classic, though I do prefer Anna

Laura - I like it, I also like Laura
Naomi - lovely
Felicity nn Flick - I like it but not a favourite
Celia - nice, a bit different. Nicer than Cecilia which seems overly frilly to me
Josephine nn Jo - love, also like nn Joey. If you like Josephine you might also like my currently favourite Jocelyn?
Renee - don't like sorry, I think it's ugly

Boys
Samuel nn Sam - nice. I personally prefer Samson.
Charles nn Charlie - dislike both Charles and Charlie
Alexander nn Alex - nice. I prefer Sascha as the nn but it is more out there

Elliott - lovely. I liked it for our children but we had girls, and dh couldn't get over the ET association
Montgomery nn Monty - dislike, sounds pretentious and doesn't fit with your other names
Finn - nice but nothing special for me
Arthur - nice, very popular in the Midlands. I prefer it as a mn

DoctorBambino · 10/06/2020 14:40

Anna nn Annie - lovely names
Emma - less keen than your other choices but it's nice enough
Lara - love this name
Naomi - lovely and underused
Felicity nn Flick - dont like
Celia - really dont like
Josephine nn Jo - really dont like
Renee - really dont like

Samuel nn Sam - love
Charles nn Charlie - like
Alexander nn Alex - too many of them
Elliott - dont like
Montgomery nn Monty - like
Finn - love
Arthur - like
