My friend is due to give birth within the next few weeks and her chosen name if a boy is 'Sully'

What are people's thoughts on this I don't think I've ever heard it before?

I think of Monsters Inc

emilybrontescorsett · 06/06/2020 23:43

Mulder & Sully.

MaisieMolly · 06/06/2020 23:44

I think of the pilot who landed the plane in the Hudson River. I do like the sound of the name though.

Allmyeye · 07/06/2020 00:22

It’s a word meaning taint. For example. Don’t sully the family name.

Yes, this. Or Monsters Inc. It's not good.

Sullivan might be better.

Runkle · 07/06/2020 00:33

It was Mulder and Scully not Sully Grin

OnABeachSomewhere · 07/06/2020 00:37

Solomon with Sol or Solly for short would be fine. Sully, on the other hand, means taint as a PP said, and reminds me of the words sullen and sulky.

SionnachRua · 07/06/2020 00:41

Also thinking of Monsters Inc and sullen.

Aclh13 · 07/06/2020 00:42

I'd rather sullivan and nn it

maddymellow · 07/06/2020 00:42

I like it! Sullivan is also great. Good luck to her.

ToyKitchenSink · 07/06/2020 01:00

Dr Quinn, Medicine Woman

babynamelover · 07/06/2020 01:11

I like Sullivan, nickname Sully. I also knew a boy Tully.

Auntieelsie · 07/06/2020 01:15

Monsters Inc.,

Strokethefurrywall · 07/06/2020 01:15

DS2 is Sullivan but goes by Sully (he's 6). He loves it, we love it, not one person has ever been weird enough to say "his name means something is tainted..." 🙄

Why is it weird? That’s what the word means. Just google it. If I met you and you told me your child was called Sully I wouldn’t dream of saying that means ‘taint’ or making any negative comment but we were asked to comment on the name.

normalpeeps · 07/06/2020 18:30

On first hearing I would think it was a mispronunciation of Sally. But that's just me.

whatausername · 07/06/2020 22:01

Sully means to defile. Not an association I'd want for my child. I'd be surprised on meeting a child with such a name but that would soon pass if the parents weren't native English speakers.

HeronLanyon · 07/06/2020 22:02

Don’t sully him with that name !

Allmyeye · 08/06/2020 00:26

😂Wish I’d thought of that!

borntohula · 08/06/2020 00:38

Literally just makes me think of Monsters Inc. Nothing unpleasant whatsoever. In fact, it's cute.

BeMorePacific · 08/06/2020 07:58

I like Sullivan, love the NN Sully. x
