DH and I love the name Maeve (Pronounced like dave but with an M not a D). It can also be spelt Meabh or Meadbh( Irish spellings) What do you think of the name? What do you think of it? Also if you have any boys names (preferably Irish names) to go with it they would be appreciated Smile

I like it. I know one and has said that a lot think she is a Mavis. That’s also a good name I think.

Ellamab · 07/06/2020 06:06

This is my name (I'm 36, Irish mum but always lived in England). It used to annoy me that people thought it was Mavis but that seems to have stopped in last 10 years due to it becoming a tiny bit more popular in TV and film.
I love my name. It's unusual without being too weird, and I love the strong female mythical queen behind it.
I've never met another Maeve in real life but I chatted to one once when I did telesales at uni and we both got really excited Grin

Oh and my brother is Gabriel in case that works for your boy name. He usually goes by Gabe and he also loves his name. I think my parents did a good job naming us in the 80s!

Edenember · 07/06/2020 09:35

@MamaSapphire mixed feelings, I love how it looks but not as keen on how it sounds if that makes any sense. I think it looks gorgeous, very faery queen. I would certainly think it was cool and different if I met one though, just perhaps not for me to use personally.

English people drag it out and pronounce it as ‘maayyyy v’ though. If you live there it would get grating after —a day— a while

Angel2702 · 07/06/2020 10:29

I love it I had Maeve / Maeva on my list it has popped up a lot in books, TV recently I definitely don’t see it as an old person name.

Ellamab · 07/06/2020 10:40

It's supposed to be pronounced like Mayev (but in a really subtle way if this makes any sense) but hardly anyone does.

IVflytrap · 07/06/2020 10:58

English people drag it out and pronounce it as ‘maayyyy v’ though.

Southeastern English do, yep, but that's just our accent on all words/names with that sound, not something reserved for the name Maeve. If you absolutely can't stand the accent in any way, Northern English accents end up with variations on Mayv, Mehv, Mey-uv, for example.

Destroyedpeople · 07/06/2020 11:00

Sorry I really don't like it it sounds dated and frumpy.

Destroyedpeople · 07/06/2020 11:00

Kind of like the irish equivalent of 'maud'
