Molly and Penny

DD1 is Molly. Is Penny too close to Molly? I love the name Penny (just Penny, not Penelope on birth cert.) but I'm not sure if it's too close to Molly.

I know twins called molly and penny. I’ve never thought the names are too similar.

SnowdropFox · 04/06/2020 09:16

I dont think they are similar. Love Penny. Congrats op.

sibbys · 04/06/2020 09:19

Yay! Thank you! Partner is unsure if it is too close and that made me wonder if it was

How could they be similar? Totally different letters (apart from the 'y'), different vowels...

It's like asking if Charles is too close to James.

userabcname · 04/06/2020 09:53

I don't think too similar at all. Lovely choices!

elfran · 04/06/2020 10:07

For me, they're too close. Both names I really love, fwiw, but the -y ending and the double letter in the middle seems a bit matchy. I'd expect Molly and Penny to be twins (not that I like matching names for twins, but it's somehow more expected then). It's certainly not a terrible thing though, and probably not something you should overthink if you both love Penny :)

With Molly, I'd love something like Hazel, Esme or Greta.

babynamelover · 04/06/2020 10:12

For me it's a bit matchy and cutsey only my opinion though.
I would be included to go with Penelope and use Penny as a nickname if you really love it as Molly & Penelope sound lovely.

Pippilangstrumpfi · 04/06/2020 10:38

I also find the names a little too matchy.

sibbys · 04/06/2020 15:15

I'll have to think about it a bit more. I don't care if they are too matchy - they are two different people - but I don't want to spend the rest og my life saying "Molly, no Penny, no I mean Molly, no no Penny"

I don't think they are too matchy.

sibbys · 04/06/2020 20:40

@elfran I totally get what you mean. If I could choose I would pick Alice or Martha. But my partner HATES those names so it's just completely off the list unfortunately.

@sibbys I don’t think they’re too matchy. Completely different sounds other than the ‘y’ endings, plenty of people name sisters with very feminine names which all end in ‘a’ and no one bats an eyelid. They are quite cutesy, but will grow with the ladies wearing them, Penny is chic on a grown lady imo, and both names have been around since forever so plenty of provenance there.

Undervaluedandsad · 05/06/2020 11:26

They are both lovely names and would be great for sisters.

In my experience you'll be doing that regardless of the names in question. I frequently rattle through all the names in the family (including pets) before landing on the right one, and none of the names are similar to each other.

sibbys · 05/06/2020 14:31

@Waiohwai

Ha ha you're probably right!
