Morning all,

I really like both Elsie and Elise as girls names.
Could I please ask for your opinion, which one do you prefer as a name?

(we would pronounce Elise as EL-eese)

Thank you Smile

Elsie

captainraymondholt · 03/06/2020 11:38

Elsie. By a very long way.

Wanderer1 · 03/06/2020 11:38

I prefer Elise as it's less diminutive. I think girls names ending -ie are too baby girl and would be harder to own as a grown professional woman. But they are very popular are the moment (Elsie, Maisie, Rosie etc) so I assume my opinion is in the minority

Livingthecovidaloca · 03/06/2020 11:40

Prefer Elsie. With Elise, she'd spend a lot of time correcting people’s pronunciations. I teach three Elise’s and they all have a different Pronunciation.

userabcname · 03/06/2020 11:42

Elise.

I really don't like Elsie.

LycraLovingLass · 03/06/2020 11:44

I love Elsie, I would go for Elspeth shortened to Elsie probably incase she wanted a more grown up name when she was older. Its a truly beautiful name.

I dint like Elise at all. I prefer Alice or Alicia if you like that sound.

Foxesandcrosses · 03/06/2020 11:45

I don't mind about people having to learn a pronunciation of a name.
They will just have to be told once and then I am sure they will pick it up.

Elise.

I've never heard of any different pronunciations other than the way you listed.

Wheresthebiffer2 · 03/06/2020 12:21

Elsie. Or even better - Elizabeth or Elisabeth. I've always liked it spelt with the s.

sunlightflower · 03/06/2020 12:23

I prefer Elise and it was actually on our list for DD, one of the reasons we didn't go for it in the end is we thought it would constantly get misread as Elsie.

chickenninja · 03/06/2020 12:25

Elise is beautiful but I agree that she'll spend a lifetime having to correct people.

BernardsarenotalwaysSaints · 03/06/2020 12:26

I like both but prefer Elise Smile

Bleepbloopblarp · 03/06/2020 12:27

It’s funny how they are so similar yet conjure up such different images of a child. To me, Elise is slightly precocious and spoilt. Elsie is cute and down to earth.

I’d prefer an Elsie Grin

RuthW · 03/06/2020 12:30

Elsie.

Elise is 'chavvy'. Don't like to use that word but can't think of an alternative.

Normandy144 · 03/06/2020 12:33

Much prefer Elise it sounds more European and sophisticated to me. Whereas Elsie to me is an old lady name.

shartsi · 03/06/2020 12:36

Elsie or Eliza

steppemum · 03/06/2020 12:44

Elsie is a bit old lady-ish, but loads of old lady names are veyr popular now. I like it.

Elise - I don't like and it is used by a certain type of family round here (yes to 'chavy')

Love Eliza
or Elsa

daisypond · 03/06/2020 12:45

Much prefer Elise. It’s more continental and elegant. Elsie is very dowdy and frumpy.

daisypond · 03/06/2020 12:46

Elizabeth is better than both.

heartbrokenfool · 03/06/2020 12:49

I prefer Elise, it suits all ages and likely to be the only one in her class / school

OneKeyAtATime · 03/06/2020 12:50

Elsie although Elise is nice too

AntiHop · 03/06/2020 12:51

I love them both. I'd go for Elsie but have Elizabeth as the full name.

NuffSaidSam · 03/06/2020 12:52

Elsie.

Elise makes me think of Ellesse, that sports brand that was big in the 90's!

UrbanDoughnut · 03/06/2020 12:53

Op - which do you prefer? Elsie or Elise?

Loads of ignorant posters - Elspeth! Elizabeth!

Are some of you hard of reading? Incapable of answering a straightforward question?

OP - I quite like both but if pushed, I think I'd go with Elise

missmouse101 · 03/06/2020 12:54

They are incomparable! Elsie is a really dull OAP name and Elise is the total opposite. Elise is much nicer.
