Morning all,

I really like both Elsie and Elise as girls names.
Could I please ask for your opinion, which one do you prefer as a name?

(we would pronounce Elise as EL-eese)

Thank you Smile

Elise is lovely. Definitely not “chavvy”.

I’m surprised Elsie is so popular. It seems like such an old lady name and not in a chic, retro way. More like Ethel or Edna.

I think you should have a couple of days using both when referencing the baby or your bump and see which one sits better. Sometimes it can surprise you that a name you thought you liked doesn't sound right when you say it out loud

Elise, because it is the name of a gorgeous song by The Cure.

nannytothequeen · 04/06/2020 06:38

I like both but prefer Elise, based on the Beethoven piece. I have worked with a little girl called Elise.she gets called Lisi.

PurBal · 04/06/2020 08:21

I know more people called Elise than Elsie. But Elsie was my granny's name so I'm very fond of it.

MrsHuntGeneNotJeremyObviously · 04/06/2020 08:24

Elise, definitely.
Elsie is an old lady! Also MN is weird in that it has a preference for old lady names and those that the rest of the population think of as a bit ugly and try hard.

arianwe · 04/06/2020 08:24

Absolutely LOVE Elsie

CrystalMaisie · 04/06/2020 08:29

Elise, sophisticated and classy name. Elsie old lady name, as others have said.

peanutsandcream · 04/06/2020 08:34

I prefer Elise. I have only heard it pronounced the way you pronounce it.

Lindy2 · 04/06/2020 08:47

DD's middle name is Elise.

My Nan was called Elsie. We wanted a name that was a tribute to her but I'm not keen on the old lady names really. We settled on Elise instead.

I think it's an elegant name - if spelt and pronounced correctly. We are very happy we chose it.

Made up versions like Alyeese, Elyse etc, if that's what some posters are referring to, are not the same.

MittensTheSerpent · 04/06/2020 09:44

Elise.

Elsie sounds like a consumptive Victorian child in a workhouse.

babynamelover · 04/06/2020 10:19

Elise :)

BatleyTownswomensGuild · 04/06/2020 13:04

Elsie is far nicer imho

pumpkinpie01 · 04/06/2020 13:31

My dd is an Elise , so obviously I'm very biased . She only gets mistaken for Elsie at the doctors sometimes and she hates it. She has never met another Elise yet , I love the name .

Cantbutwill · 04/06/2020 16:27

Elise by far.

Chewy85 · 04/06/2020 16:43

Elise is beautiful and elegant. I will never forget an amazing young nurse when I was in hospital named Elise so I’m a bit biased towards that!

Elsie is a tad cutsie

C0RA · 04/06/2020 16:44

Elyse makes it more obvious how to pronounce it.

MikeUniformMike · 04/06/2020 16:45

Elyse is just wrong.

Oliversmumsarmy · 04/06/2020 17:46

Elyse I would pronounce Ellis

bridgetreilly · 04/06/2020 18:41

I've seen Elyse before but I much prefer Elise. I think it's pretty obvious how to pronounce it either way. And neither is pronounced Ellis.

daisypond · 04/06/2020 20:06

Elyse is awful.
It would be pronounced Eh-lice.

Edenember · 05/06/2020 10:39

@Foxesandcrosses I prefer Elise

GeorginaEstonia · 05/06/2020 10:48

They seem like totally opposite names to me although the letters are the same. Elsie is frilly, pretty, old fashioned, cute. Possibly verging on twee.

Elise is sophisticated, classy, elegant.

I like both, but they give me very different impressions. (BTW I know Elsies and Elises who don’t fit my descriptions, so it’s very much atttached to the names, for me).

GeorginaEstonia · 05/06/2020 10:49

And Ellis is super cool, modern, feisty and totally different again.

daisypond · 05/06/2020 11:05

I’m amazed that anyone can see Elsie as frilly, pretty and cute. I can’t get my head around that. To me, Elsie is poor, oldish woman, hair in curlers, fag hanging out of mouth, hard life, char lady, etc. Very dowdy. Very unattractive.
