Morning all,

I really like both Elsie and Elise as girls names.
Could I please ask for your opinion, which one do you prefer as a name?

(we would pronounce Elise as EL-eese)

Thank you Smile

Elsie

Elsie is one of the very popular chambermaid names. Like Molly, Betsy etc. They have a certain lively charm but are not very sophisticated.

Elise is elegant, grown up and sounds European.

Most people will prefer Elsie.

diddlediddle · 05/06/2020 18:51

I don't think I can overstate how much I prefer Elise to Elsie.

Elise is a classy, pretty name. Works well internationally. Nice nicknames.

Elsie is far far more common, not in a good way. It sounds like a nickname, kind of weak sounding.

Orphlids · 05/06/2020 19:40

I am really enjoying the analogies here: Elsie’s husband in brown trousers, etc. I agree with them. Elsie doesn’t sound very sophisticated, unfortunately. Elise, to me, is the opposite. I’d love to be named Elise. I picture someone independent, well educated and maybe a little bit haughty. It’s splendid!

Elouera · 05/06/2020 19:51

I went to school with an Elisse (spelt that way). Its FAR nicer than Elsie. Sorry to any Elsies, but the name reminds me of an elderly, poor woman with a fag and rollers in her hair!

Absolutely love Elise and nearly chose it for DD. I'm not quite sure of your pronunciation though? I think in our accent the emphasis is on the second half and I if I try to put the emphasis on the EL it sounds very clunky.

Elsie I find very frumpy and not pretty.

jakeyboy1 · 05/06/2020 19:56

I love Elise.
Reminds me of Elize du Toit who is stunning.

seriousandloyal · 05/06/2020 19:57

Elise

ChelseaElsieEliseElsa · 05/06/2020 20:02

I've name changed just to come on and say, as a late thirties Elsie, Elsie is very rarely heard as Elsie.

Posters saying Elise will be misheard or misspelled or whatever. It's perhaps a bit better now lots of little girls under 8 are bringing Elsie back into popularity (I've finally stopped turning in the park when I hear my name called).

I've been called Elise, Emma, Chelsea, Ella, Elsa, Ellie, Alisa, Ulsey etc so if you are worried about using Elise because people will mishear it, it's just the same for the other name too.

Which is ok

Because Elsie's are great people and don't mind, I never wear curlers when I have a fag Grin

EuphieKat · 06/06/2020 02:28

Elise is lovely but I’m not keen on Elsie.

villainousbroodmare · 06/06/2020 03:01

Exactly what DramaAlpaca said:

*Elise is gorgeous, elegant, sophisticated and international. It's not in the least bit 'chavvy', which is a horrible expression.

Elsie manages to be both dowdy and cutesy in the same name, which is some achievement.*

Also as others have said, Elise is generally pronounced EhLEES and anything else sounds rather peculiar.

Mollymalone123 · 06/06/2020 03:50

Elise- as she is the kindest person I have ever met - I’m biased- but she has had a lifetime of being called Elsie by mistake 😂

geojojo · 06/06/2020 07:02

They're both lovely but have such a different feel to them. Elsie has a really old fashioned, cute vibe whereas Elise is very sleek and elegant. I prefer Elsie personally.

Foxesandcrosses · 06/06/2020 10:32

ChelseaElsieEliseElsa Grin love your post! Thank you for your opinion as someone who owns the name that's really helpful.

There are lots of positives for both names.

Disappointed that some on MN still use the term 'chavy'....thought we were better than stooping to derogatory terms Hmm

Elise and Elsie are so different to me.

Elsie is like Mabel, Flossie, Ivy, Sadie.

Whereas to my ear Elise is chic but not stuffy.
European but not pretentious
Quite like Alice but a bit more unusual.

Then there's the Beethoven, PJ Harvey song and The Cure's dreamy Letter to Elise.....

In short I think I should have been called Elise

Emmapeeler1 · 06/06/2020 11:04

Elise is lovely. Makes me think of Fuer Elise.

MeAgain2020 · 06/06/2020 12:01

Elise is nicer, I think.
I know so many Elsie's.... cute name, but very popular. I also always think it's a name that's cute on a little girl and nice for an older lady. In between grown up years - really depends on what the person is like.

redwoodmazza · 06/06/2020 12:18

Elise - it's beautiful.

Elsie makes me think of Elsie Tanner!!!! [Showing my age now...]

Twelve8Ts · 06/06/2020 13:41

Another one here for Elise! I absolutely love it.

Do not get the chavvy thing at all. Is that even still a thing..

Elsie is slightly more bland in my opinion (no offence to anyone) x

JollyGiraffe12 · 06/06/2020 13:59

I prefer Elise too

Lobsterquadrille2 · 06/06/2020 14:47

I like them both but probably lElise more. Agree about the most common pronunciation being Eh-LEES though. Piers Morgan has a daughter called Elise. Beethoven's Elise had that as a nickname derived from Elisabet I think.

caringcarer · 06/06/2020 15:47

I prefer Elise. Not keen on Elsie. The only one I know is 88 and a moaner.

IloveParmaViolets · 06/06/2020 16:34

Elise is classier so suitable for both child & adult and Elsie sounds childish so Elise would be my choice.

CuppaZa · 06/06/2020 16:36

Elise.
Elsie has been done to death in the last few years. I also think that as an adult, Elise sounds better.
