Elena Eleanor pronunciation

I personally would pronounce Eleanor and Elena exactly the same - eh le na (with the stress on the first syllable)

If I want that pronunciation, should I use Eleanor or elena ?

I worry that with Eleanor there will be SOME people who pronounce it eh le NOR. I know this would really irritate me.

Equally , would Elena be pronounced by some people as eh LAY na or eh-LEN-a ?

Anyone know/ got an Eleanor / Elena who can share their findings ?

Thank you!

Hello.
So I read Elena as Eh lay na,
And Eleanor as Eh le nor!
I called my daughter Ellena (pronounced Ellen-ah) just because I loved Eleanor as some ppl pronounce it but couldn’t just not say the ‘or’ myself! If that makes sense 🤣
Her siblings always call her Ellie.
I love that name but it does get lots of mispronounce and having a different spelling is also not the best.
I love the meaning too, I think that in Greek it’s light or bright ❤️ Which is beautiful.
Saying all that, if I had the choice to change it I’d probably would.. just for something that has one solid pronouncing!
Good luck with everything x

Elena - eh-LAY-na
Eleanor - Ellen-a

I'd say Elena and Ellena the same.

Eléna would be more El ay na.

TARSCOUT · 20/06/2020 08:41

Elena would be ell een ah and Eleanor would be el an or. But I'm Scotland

I'm pregnant and if it's a little girl naming her Elena, but will be pronouncing it E-len-a. There was another post similar to this and a lot more people agreed that was the way it was said. I'm surprised so many on here would say e-lay-na.

To me, Eleanor rhymes with Helena because I have a non-rhotic accent (South East England).
I recognise that Eleanor is pronounced El-en- NOR by rhotic accents (Scotland, West country, most of USA).
The majority of Elenas I have met are El-LAY-nuh, but I have also met a couple of Elenas who rhyme with Helena.

Elena and Helena > Elen-ah and Helen-a

Eleanor > Elean-or
