Context;
DH is Jewish, I’m not. Looking at Hebrew names that are distinctive without being completely out there 👍

Phonetic pronunciation is “shosh-AH-nah“.
Sounds like “shoh-shanna”

Try not to be too mean as I really like this one!🤣

I really like it, OP.

Riverviews · 01/06/2020 22:29

It's s no from me. Only because if she ended up lov living in Spain, she'd have to change it. I know it's silly of me, but it's too close to Spanish word which would make it too rude

WeMarchOn · 01/06/2020 22:42

@NameChange84 my friend is friends with her 💜

DidoLamenting · 01/06/2020 22:48

I don't have thoughts on the name but I'm really tickled by this piece of advice. Not sure why but it struck me as very funny.

There are many. many names which don't track well with a scottish accent. I wouldn't say that would be a reason to avoid them, especially if you aren't likely to be around many scottish people

whattodo2019 · 01/06/2020 22:55

Sorry but it sounds made up and ridiculous.

user1493494961 · 01/06/2020 22:56

Sorry, not for me.

OnlyJudyCanJudgeMe · 01/06/2020 23:00

Gorgeous!! Love it!

3rdNamechange · 01/06/2020 23:01

I love it. The Shoshahnah in Inglorious Basterds was a strong woman.
I don't get why people think they can't use it if they're not Jewish though.

PhoenixBuchanan · 01/06/2020 23:03

Absolutely bloody love this name. Just gorgeous.

TheOrigBrave · 01/06/2020 23:06

I know one. No one struggles with her name or remarks on it being made up or sloshy or anything. I'm quite surprised so many posters have never heard of it.

It's pretty.

MEgirl · 01/06/2020 23:09

My niece is called Shoshana. She's called Shosh by friends and Shana by family. The name in Hebrew also means a rose.

coronabeer23 · 01/06/2020 23:11

Sorry but it sounds made up and ridiculous.

What an ignorant comment. It’s ok not to like it but it’s clear from the posts that It’s not a made up name. It’s perfectly common in Jewish circles and neither is it ridiculous. It’s just not a common English name.

Dilbertian · 01/06/2020 23:31

Oh I don't take offence Smile It's been interesting reading the opinions of people to whom Shoshanna is completely novel, whereas to me it's a common-or-garden name. Reminds me of my parents' bewilderment when a neighbour named their ds 'Clark', particularly as they'd only just got to grips with how to pronounce 'clerk'Grin

Buttercup54321 · 01/06/2020 23:33

Awful. Sounds like a drunk saying Susannah.

Needmoresleep · 02/06/2020 00:12

I don’t know if I am alone but my first thought was of high church Catholic with lots in incense

“hosanna in excelsis”

I assume there are similar Biblical origins.

blackice · 02/06/2020 00:16

Love it!! (But only ok if you/your family have Jewish background which you do.)

missyoumuch · 02/06/2020 00:17

Nope. There are better modern Jewish names. How about Aviva or Noa?

BabyBrainJane · 02/06/2020 00:56

I don’t think I was aware of quite how much some people actively enjoy saying a name you like is absolutely shit 🤔

There’s a few comments on this thread that just take it too far and are plain disrespectful. It’s an odd hobby but maybe it keeps you entertained 🤷‍♀️

I’m surprised it’s getting so much hate to be honest. To me it sounds pretty, feminine and soft.

Kokeshi123 · 02/06/2020 01:42

Unusual but it could grow on me. It has a nice sound. "Shana" is a nice NN as well.

locked2020 · 02/06/2020 02:13

I like it and toyed with it for my baby, but was put off when a friend said it sounded like a drunk person trying to say suzannah. I still like it though!

IPityThePontipines · 02/06/2020 02:20

OP you clearly love it and that's all that matters.

I think it's a nice name.

Aclh13 · 02/06/2020 03:19

I respect your traditionalist but unless your plan is to have this as your legal name but the given name to be Anna, please don't give your child a name they might be bullied for

Aclh13 · 02/06/2020 03:19

Traditionalism *

worstwitch18 · 02/06/2020 03:22

I like it! I had a childhood friend with this name and she was lovely, so my opinion could be influenced by that. Interestingly she had one Christian parent and one atheist, no Jewish background.

Nicknames will probably be Sho, Shosha or Shoshie so make sure you like those as well, though you could probably get away with the nickname Ana if you wanted.

I am a bit bewildered by all the people saying it's like Susanna(h). Well, of course, they have the same biblical origin! Susanna(h) is derived from Shoshana. Where do these people think classic English names came from?!

DateLoaf · 02/06/2020 07:09

Lovely.
