Wulfric/Wolfric

I can't believe I'm considering this Confused but partner loves old english/anglo saxon names and would love to name our little boy Wolfric/Wulfric (not sure what spelling we would use).

We had settled on a very modest, normal boys name because I don't like anything too 'out there' or 'try hard'.

I wanted our boy to have a strong, neutral name that wouldn't stand out but isn't too boring.

However when he mentions Wolfric to other family members, they think it's a fabulous name and can't understand why I'm against it.
I'm really not against it, I think it's fab too, and love the idea of Wolfie for a nn for a little boy.

I'm just worried what other people will think, and worried that I'll be embarassed or hesitant when having to tell people his name, if that makes sense?

What do you think of this name? And Wolfie as a nn?

I think it's dreadful.

I think you probably should feel embarrassed introducing your child as 'Wolfie'!

What you need is a puppy. Wolfie is a great name for a dog.

BabyDust13 · 28/05/2020 18:23

I quite like it but I don't think I'd be brave enough to use 😊

Merename · 28/05/2020 18:24

Yes sorry it’s really daft. Totally out there. I’d be interested in how many wolfrics there were in the last charts!!

Tlollj · 28/05/2020 18:24

No ffs

ProperVexed · 28/05/2020 18:25

I love it! Simply superb!

Windyatthebeach · 28/05/2020 18:27

Well obviously Wolfgang or Wolverine with nn Wolfie...
Grin

LittleBoyJuly2020 · 28/05/2020 18:28

The name we settled on, was Owen.
Maybe a compromise would be Owen Wolfric Surname?

Personally I love it. Normally not over keen on 'out there' names but I do like this one.

He could be Wolf or Wolfie for short.

daisypond · 28/05/2020 18:31

I’d spell it Wulfric. The other looks wrong to me. Hard one to pull off, but I rather like it. Wouldn’t use it, though... Wilfred is similar in sound, but not in meaning.

CaraDune · 28/05/2020 18:32

I rather like Wulfric! Grin (For some reason I prefer it spelled with a "u").

Mind you, you might end up with your adult son in the situation a friend of mine found himself in - about to be married, and at the hen do his fiancee had to make us all promise not to take a fit of the giggles when it got to the "I, XYZ, take thee..." bit, because the Y bit of XYZ was, shall we say, unusual.

Mind you, I have (for family reasons, and because his namesake is a lovely guy and he and his wife were fabulously supportive to me while I was pregnant) saddled my DS with a Scots Gaelic middle name.

midsomermurderess · 28/05/2020 18:40

I think Wulfric is rather fabulous.

whatausername · 28/05/2020 18:40

Owen Wulfric is good. If your child isn't particularly confident or outgoing he could feel uncomfortable introducing himself with such an unusual name. It is a person you're naming after all and you can't be sure what personality he'll have.

TeaAddict235 · 28/05/2020 18:40

It's very 'The last kingdom' / trying to emphasise my Celtic/ English heritage so there is no doubt of our heritage in the future should the child be called to an interview Hmm

Why not just use Wilfred?

welshpolarbear · 28/05/2020 18:42
Confused
ILoveAnOwl · 28/05/2020 18:44

I like it too. Prefer the u. St Wulstan died at Haselbury Plucknett which is also an amazing place name!

ScarfLadysBag · 28/05/2020 18:44

I could never use it for myself but there is something rather stupendous about it Grin

aFaintSeashellAroma · 28/05/2020 18:44

Christ no!

OntheWaves40 · 28/05/2020 18:45

Awful. Poor boy.

QuintusEstInHorto · 28/05/2020 18:45

I love it and prefer the 'u' version. So much stronger than Owen.

Blursula · 28/05/2020 18:51

I like Wulfric with that spelling (more so than Owen) but not keen at all on the nn Wulfie.

sweetnosugar · 28/05/2020 18:52

I usually love out there names but I really don’t like Wolfric. Sounds like a cross between Wolf and Wilfred! However that being said it’s your choice not mine, it you have your heart set on it then go for it! Or like you suggested use it as a middle name.

DramaAlpaca · 28/05/2020 18:54

God no. If you do, it's normally spelled Wulfric.

Owen is much nicer.

WutheringShites86 · 28/05/2020 19:03

I'm in a similar predicament OP. For a girl my partner has his heart set on Elswyth (after I've absolutely ruled out Aethelflead!). I'm considering this with a very plain, non 'out there' middle name. Possible nn Elsie or Ellie.

I wouldn't worry too much about what others think if you both like it but I think its good to consider the nn and middle name if you're going for something unusual so the child has options if they grow up hating it.

SimpleKindofLife · 28/05/2020 19:12

Goodness OP, that's quite a bold name. I'm not keen at all. Owen is much nicer.

@WutheringShites86 I quite like Elswyth!

PaulHollywoodsSexGut · 28/05/2020 19:19

Owen Wulfric works.

Wulfric doesn’t.

I sympathise with your husband, I wanted DS’ far out middle name as his first name for a while but I can see now that would have been a bad idea.

Owen Wulfric for the win.
