Which spelling would you use if its was to be your sons middle name?

Emil is German

Emile is French

So up to you really!

The first one. Emile looks quite feminine.

LondonTowers · 27/05/2020 13:19

Not too bothered about the spelling in the sense of French/ Germanic habits as it is a Latin European name and very international ..... Just wonder if people think it looks better one way or the other.....

kinda think Emil is less fussy! x

I know an Emile, he is French.

LondonTowers · 27/05/2020 13:32

Yep I know of a few south African emiles and emils and British and German emils.... people seem to think the name is French but it isn't.

Its superficial.....but I'm interested in what preference people have towards spelling

Emile, I love it.

nekaTemanresU · 27/05/2020 13:37

Emil doesn't look right to me but either way a great name.

Abbccc · 27/05/2020 13:39

They aren't pronounced the same. How do you pronounce it?

LondonTowers · 27/05/2020 13:40

I like that Emil looks less fussy but I also think it looks like its missing something if you put Emil/ Emile side by side...Grin
Pretty insignificant problem in the grand scheme of things! Hmm

I really like this name, I agree that in the UK the Emil spelling prob works better for a boy. Emile to some people will look more feminine.

merryhouse · 27/05/2020 13:53

Emil is pronounced a bit like Emma, Emile is pronounced a bit like the start of Amelia.

LondonTowers · 27/05/2020 13:58

I think that pronunciation might depend more on where your from. My south African in laws will say it differently to my british reli's..... we would pronounce it e-mille regardless of spelling.... perhaps that's incorrect!?

LondonTowers · 27/05/2020 14:06

@merryhouse ahhh thanks I thought they both had an "Em" sound....in that case I definitely prefer the Emil spelling.....and sounding!

Emil is pronounced a bit like Emma,

No no no. It's pronounced Eh-meel. The Eh is long and sound more like ay.

Grufallosfriends · 27/05/2020 17:29

And the correct French spelling is Émile.

In German it's Emil.

But the first E is pronounced the same!

Erynn · 27/05/2020 19:39

This is going to sound a bit weird but if it’s a middle name, I think Emile is better. It looks more finished, if that makes sense. I slightly prefer the Emil spelling in general but I don’t know why but Emile just seems more natural in the middle.

I'm a fan of Astrid Lindgren's children's books. Emil will therefore always be a Swedish ( mischievous) protagonist to me. I like it.

DramaAlpaca · 27/05/2020 22:44

I'd definitely spell it Emil.
