What do you think, for a boy? Pitching baby names and I am waiting for something to jump out at me still! Also open to other suggestions, general criteria are:

Scottish if possible
Cannot be a surname
Doesn't end in "S" or "-ian"
Should travel well (Europe)

We also like:
Rory
Robin
Hamish
Gregor
Arthur
Callum

callan is a surname

badg3r · 26/05/2020 09:49

Really? Damn! I have never heard it used as a surname before. In that case, any opinions on the others?

I have only ever known it as a girls name, but it is lovely.

badg3r · 26/05/2020 09:50

I like Callum quite a lot too but to reminds me of "Gollum" so of the time which is not really the sort of vibe I would want to associate with a person...!

I know a couple of Callans. Both boys both around 6 or 7

It's a lovely name

badg3r · 26/05/2020 09:51

Oh no I don't like Colin very much at all!

OP posts:
badg3r · 26/05/2020 09:52

@chrislilleyswig that's good to know. I've never actually met one before but it seems to have been gaining in popularity recently (top 100 - just - in the most recent Scottish charts)

I think Callan would often get confused with Callum. I've never heard of it though. Ewen? Rowan?

margotsdevil · 26/05/2020 09:54

I know a couple of Callans (both boys) but I'm more familiar with it as a surname, sorry.

badg3r · 26/05/2020 09:55

I like Ewan but we can use it unfortunately. Rowan is nice!

FluffMagnet · 26/05/2020 10:07

I've only ever known Callan as a surname I'm afraid.

Graffitiqueen · 26/05/2020 10:09

I know a couple of callans. Not overly keen on it.

I've never heard of this name before. I think it's rather nice but I think he will spend his life explaining to people that it's Callan and not Callum. If you like Callum as well then that would certainly be an easier name for him to live with.

If I met a little boy called Callan, I think I probably would mishear and think it was Callum unless I saw it written down at the same time, but once I'd been corrected I would remember it for the next time.

peperethecat · 26/05/2020 10:18

By the way I don't associate Callum with Gollum at all, if that helps.

mylittleavalon · 26/05/2020 10:19

Lachlan?

badg3r · 26/05/2020 10:21

I love Lachlan but can't use it unfortunately. Thanks for all the opinions!

mylittleavalon · 26/05/2020 10:30

I like Callan but agree that would hear Callum. Others I can think of: Corrin, Arran, Frazer, Murdo (bit out there), Munro (also out there)

BlueGreenYellowRed · 26/05/2020 10:31

How about Calvin?

peperethecat · 26/05/2020 10:36

What about Alec?

Xiaoxiong · 26/05/2020 10:37

Frazer
Hugh
Adare
Rory
Fergus

babynamelover · 26/05/2020 10:41

I know a grown Kellan he goes by Kell. I also know a Camden. Cian is lovely too.

userabcname · 26/05/2020 10:46

I know a boy Callan. I like it actually, although prefer Callum. Also like Arthur from your original list.
